Residents have voiced concerns over the impact of increased visitor numbers. Craig Chapman, chair of Bibury Parish Council, described the situation as “problematic,” emphasizing the burden placed on locals. In an interview with BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Chapman remarked on the surprising nature of the recognition, saying, “It’s a great honour, but it’s a little bit of a surprise; there’s a lot of competition out there.”

The village, which previously enjoyed a tranquil atmosphere, now grapples with congestion caused by large coaches and minibuses. “The reality is we sit on a B-road. The road is narrow; there’s one bridge across the River Coln, which is only wide enough for one vehicle,” Chapman explained. The increase in traffic has led to significant challenges, prompting local authorities to implement measures to manage the situation.

Measures to Maintain Harmony

To alleviate the pressure on the village, officials have introduced several strategies. Parking spaces in the village centre have been closed, and new drop-off and collection points have been established. Additionally, visitors are encouraged to travel in smaller vehicles to mitigate congestion.

Chapman noted the need for “harmony” between residents and tourists, stating, “The issue is very much about the mechanisms whereby people come to the village and, when they come here, how they behave and where they park.” This proactive approach aims to ensure that Bibury retains its charm while accommodating the growing number of visitors.

Despite the challenges posed by increased tourism, the allure of Bibury remains undeniable.
