At least 27 people, including a newborn baby, perished when a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Italy. The incident occurred approximately 22 kilometers south of the island of Lampedusa on Wednesday, with ongoing efforts to locate those still missing. Local media reported that authorities have recovered 20 bodies, six of which were found trapped beneath the overturned vessel.

The boat, carrying nearly 100 migrants, departed from Libya on Tuesday evening. According to the Italian coast guard, the death toll of 27 is still “provisional and being updated.” Survivors indicated that the migrants initially set off on two boats. When one began taking on water, all passengers were transferred to the other, a fibreglass vessel that subsequently capsized due to overloading. The length of time the migrants had spent at sea remains unclear.

Filippo Mannino, the Mayor of Lampedusa, stated that the shipwreck likely occurred “presumably at dawn.” So far in 2025, the UN refugee agency has reported 675 migrant deaths in the central Mediterranean, not including the latest tragedy.

Filippo Ungaro, a spokesperson for the UNHCR in Italy, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He stated, “We are now assisting the survivors,” highlighting the ongoing humanitarian response to this crisis. The year has seen a significant increase in migrant arrivals, with 30,060 refugees and migrants reaching Italy by sea in the first half of the year, marking a 16 percent rise compared to the same period in 2024.

Escalating Crisis in the Mediterranean

The migration route from Northern Africa to Southern Europe is recognized as one of the most perilous in the world. Over the past decade, nearly 24,500 individuals have died or gone missing while attempting the Mediterranean crossing. Most fatalities are linked to small boats departing from Tunisia and Libya.

The deadliest incident in recent memory occurred in October 2013, when a vessel carrying over 500 migrants from Eritrea, Somalia, and Ghana caught fire and capsized near Lampedusa, resulting in at least 368 deaths. This tragedy amplified international calls for urgent action to address the ongoing crisis.

In response to the latest disaster, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, who has prioritized combating illegal immigration, vowed to continue efforts against “unscrupulous traffickers.” She emphasized the need for improved measures to prevent irregular departures and better manage migration flows. Meloni remarked, “That today’s tragedy occurred despite a ready and operational international response warns us that the necessary rescue effort is not sufficient and, above all, does not address the root causes of this tragic problem.”

As the search for missing individuals continues, the incident has reignited discussions surrounding the humanitarian crisis affecting migrants in the Mediterranean. The international community faces increasing pressure to find effective solutions to prevent further loss of life in this ongoing tragedy.
