A tsunami warning has been issued following a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale that struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. The quake occurred in the early hours of September 13, 2023, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). This seismic event comes just days after a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake, which is recorded as the sixth strongest ever documented, affected the same region.

The latest earthquake’s epicentre was located approximately 111.7 km (about 69.3 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of around 39 km (about 24 miles). In response to the quake, the US Tsunami Warning System has activated alerts indicating a potential tsunami threat to coastal areas.

Local authorities and emergency services are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond as further information becomes available. Residents in coastal regions are advised to stay informed and heed any evacuation orders should they be issued.

As of now, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. However, the combined impact of two strong earthquakes within a short period raises concerns about aftershocks and their potential effects on the region.
