UK Volunteer Drives Four Ambulances to Aid Ukraine’s War Victims

An aid volunteer from the United Kingdom, Peter White, has garnered attention for his remarkable efforts to support victims of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. White, aged 70, has purchased, equipped, and driven four ambulances filled with essential medical supplies from the UK to Ukraine, specifically targeting areas affected by the conflict instigated by Vladimir Putin‘s invasion.

White’s journey began in November 2024 when he acquired a second-hand blue VW Caravelle. He partnered with the Bournemouth-based charity Ukraine Relief to transport medical supplies to the city of Dnipro. His commitment to this cause stems from a profound sense of justice against the backdrop of the war. The first ambulance he provided was tragically destroyed by a Russian missile, while the second has been repurposed to transport children with cerebral palsy in an orphanage.

From Journalist to Humanitarian

White’s background is rich with experiences that have shaped his dedication to humanitarian efforts. He began his career as a journalist, covering significant events such as the Lebanese Civil War and even facing captivity during his reporting. His previous work includes running an ambulance service during the First Gulf War in 1990 and collaborating with UNICEF to deliver medical supplies during the chaotic aftermath of the Cold War.

Reflecting on his motivations, White shared, “It’s the people themselves. They’re absolutely incredible. The women and children are beautiful souls and the men are gallant, determined, and courageous.” He aims to leave a positive impact as he approaches the latter stages of his life.

Challenges and Triumphs in Ukraine

On his missions, White has witnessed the devastating effects of the war. He described his last trip to Chernivtsi—a region that has seen an influx of wounded soldiers—saying, “There’s a natural fatigue on the part of the Ukrainians. They don’t see an end to it.” The physical and emotional toll of the conflict is evident, with amputees and damaged infrastructure a common sight.

In addition to delivering medical supplies, White is preparing a fourth ambulance, a Land Rover, for another trip to Ukraine before Christmas. He expressed a desire to bring joy to children affected by the war, stating his intention to fly a Santa Claus to the region despite concerns about logistical challenges.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Karol Swiacki, founder and CEO of Ukraine Relief, praised White’s commitment, calling him an “incredible individual” who exemplifies the spirit of altruism. “We are so lucky to have such amazing people supporting our charity,” Swiacki stated.
