A wallaby has been spotted roaming freely in the streets of Berlin, drawing attention from both locals and police. The marsupial, which stands approximately 90 centimetres tall, was first reported on the morning of Sunday in the western district of Spandau. In response to the unusual sighting, local authorities have advised the public to maintain a safe distance while keeping visual contact with the animal.

Chief Inspector Martin Halweg of the Berlin police confirmed on Monday that officers are no longer actively pursuing the wallaby, as it is not deemed a threat to public safety. Initial reports had prompted police to dispatch a unit to the area after bystanders alerted them to the creature’s presence. However, the wallaby managed to evade capture by darting into a nearby forest, leaving officers unable to track its whereabouts.

Police are not equipped with specialized tools for capturing wallabies or kangaroos, relying instead on basic equipment typically used for domestic animals. “We have blankets and snares for free-roaming dogs, but nothing specific for larger marsupials,” Halweg explained.

A video circulating on social media shows the wallaby hopping down a dimly lit street, pausing briefly to lick its paws while a woman expresses her surprise. This footage appears to have been recorded around the time of the wallaby’s disappearance, further intriguing the public.

Reports from German media indicate that the wallaby may belong to a private owner, though the exact circumstances surrounding its escape remain unclear. Chief Inspector Halweg emphasized the rarity of such incidents, stating, “Cases like this are indeed very rare,” which adds a unique twist to the ongoing search.

As the situation unfolds, Berlin police recommend that anyone who spots the wallaby should contact authorities or the Berlin Animal Catcher. Halweg urged the public to keep their distance while ensuring the animal remains in sight, allowing emergency personnel to approach safely. The local police department does not typically track lost animals, making this case an unusual occurrence in their records.

The playful nature of the wallaby has captivated the attention of Berliners, sparking conversations and speculation about its journey through the city streets.
