Zelensky Exposes British Components in Russian Drones Targeting Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that Russian weapons used in attacks against Ukraine contain components sourced from allied nations, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. This statement comes in the wake of recent drone strikes that resulted in civilian casualties, prompting Zelensky to urge for more stringent sanctions against Russia.

During a press briefing, Zelensky highlighted that Russian missiles and drones utilized in a series of attacks on March 10, 2024, incorporated over 100,000 foreign-made parts, specifically identifying British microcomputers among them. He emphasized the need for allies to enhance their sanctions efforts and close loopholes that allow these components to reach Russian military supplies.

A spokesperson for the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) responded to Zelensky’s claims, asserting that the government has been actively working to restrict the export of goods that could contribute to Russian weaponry. The spokesperson noted, “We take reports of goods from UK companies being found in Russian weaponry incredibly seriously.” They confirmed that the UK has banned the export of thousands of items, including all battlefield equipment brought to their attention by Ukraine.

Zelensky expressed particular concern over the ongoing facilitation of these components, stating on social media platform X that “microcomputers for drone flight control are produced in the United Kingdom.” He underscored the importance of dismantling all schemes that circumvent sanctions, mentioning that Ukraine’s allies possess detailed information on companies still supplying Russia.

In addition to UK components, Zelensky pointed to other nations, such as China, Taiwan, and the Netherlands, as responsible for manufacturing parts found in Russian weaponry. These revelations come as Russia launched a significant offensive, deploying 549 missiles and drones in a single night, which tragically resulted in the deaths of four family members in the village of Lapaivka, including a 15-year-old girl.

Despite comprehensive sanctions imposed on Russia since the onset of its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russian economy has shown resilience. Analysts have noted that increased military spending has compensated for job losses in sectors affected by sanctions, leading to continued economic growth. Moreover, Russian energy exports have successfully found new markets in countries like China and India, following the withdrawal of European buyers.
