West Ham Pursues Mateus Fernandes as Southampton Holds Firm

Southampton FC has yet to receive an enhanced offer from West Ham United for midfielder Mateus Fernandes following the rejection of an initial bid. Reports indicate that Southampton is still awaiting a response after West Ham’s first approach for the Portuguese player was turned down. As the summer transfer window draws to a close, Fernandes has become a focal point of speculation.
Having joined Southampton from Sporting CP last year for a reported fee of £15 million, Fernandes enjoyed a solid debut season in the Premier League. His performance last year included 36 appearances, where he scored two goals and provided four assists. As of August 21, 2024, he has already participated in both of Southampton’s opening league matches under new manager Will Still, coming off the bench against Wrexham and starting the match against Ipswich Town.
The Premier League transfer window closes on September 1, 2024, leaving Southampton with limited time to finalize any negotiations. West Ham’s initial proposal for Fernandes was reportedly valued at £30 million, a figure that did not meet Southampton’s expectations. It has been suggested that Southampton values Fernandes similarly to Romeo Lavia, who was sold to Chelsea for £58 million. Given the length of Fernandes’ contract, which runs until the summer of 2029, Southampton appears to have the upper hand in negotiations.
While there were claims earlier this week that West Ham had submitted a revised offer for the midfielder, those reports have since been clarified, indicating that no new bid has been made. The urgency for West Ham to strengthen their squad has increased following a 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, which may compel the club to act decisively in the final week of the transfer window.
Southampton’s reputation as tough negotiators is well-known, and it seems clear that West Ham will need to significantly increase their offer if they wish to secure Fernandes. The next fixture for Southampton will be a home match against Stoke City on August 23, 2024, where they will look to build on their early season performances. As the transfer deadline approaches, the situation surrounding Fernandes remains fluid, highlighting the complexities and pressures of the summer transfer market.
