Nelly Furtado Steps Back from Live Performances for Now
Nelly Furtado, the Canadian pop sensation who rose to fame in the early 2000s, has announced she will be stepping back from live performances for the “foreseeable future.” This decision marks a significant shift for the artist, known for her hits such as “I’m Like a Bird,” “Promiscuous,” and “Maneater.”
In a heartfelt social media post, the 45-year-old singer reflected on her journey since the release of her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, on March 27, 2000. Furtado reminisced about her early days, recalling her excitement before performing at the Lilith Fair. She shared, “I went down to a store called ‘Original’ on Queen West in Toronto and shopped for that pink dress and some sparkly platform shoes to perform in.”
Furtado expressed gratitude for her music’s enduring appeal, stating, “25 years later, my music has reached a whole new generation of fans, and I couldn’t be happier about that.” She acknowledged the joy of seeing her work resonate with new audiences and emphasized the “lasting power of good music.”
As she prepares to embark on new creative endeavors, Furtado noted her love for songwriting, describing it as a hobby she was fortunate enough to turn into a career. “I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music,” she said. “I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”
The singer’s announcement was met with an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists alike. Presenter Dina Pugliese commented, “Your music makes the world a better place. A more joyful place.” Similarly, actress Amanda Brugel encouraged Furtado to “go write that new chapter,” wishing her the same magic she has shared over the years.
Throughout her career, Furtado has sold over 45 million records worldwide and has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy, a Brit Award, and a Billboard Music Award. Her decision to step away from live performances follows a reflection on the pressures of the music industry, particularly regarding body image. Earlier this year, she candidly discussed her experiences with aesthetic pressures, emphasizing her journey toward self-acceptance.
In her message for the future, Furtado invited others to “express yourself freely” and celebrate individuality. She highlighted the importance of feeling comfortable in one’s own skin, stating, “We are all cute little humans just bouncing around the earth looking for hugs.”
As she steps back, Furtado leaves behind a legacy of impactful music and a passionate fanbase. Her exploration of new creative pursuits will undoubtedly be watched closely by her supporters as she navigates this next chapter of her life.
