Two-Year-Old Myla Duffey Wins Silver at British Transplant Games

A remarkable achievement unfolded at the British Transplant Games when Myla Duffey, a two-year-old girl whose life was saved by a liver transplant during infancy, secured a silver medal in an obstacle race. The event took place in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, bringing together transplant recipients to celebrate their resilience and athleticism.
Myla’s journey began when she was born with damaged bile ducts, a condition that put her life at serious risk. Her parents, Laura and Liam Duffey, both 31, received devastating news shortly after her birth; doctors informed them that without a transplant, Myla might not survive to see her first birthday. In a life-changing moment, Laura’s best friend, Naedean Marshall, selflessly offered to donate part of her liver to save Myla’s life.
At the Games, Laura expressed her deep gratitude for Naedean’s courageous act, stating, “I will never be able to repay her for what she has done for Myla—she’s a true life hero.” The emotional weight of that moment was evident as Myla received her medal, a tangible symbol of triumph over adversity. “Watching her being presented with her silver medal was an amazing moment,” Laura added, reflecting on the joy of the occasion.
The British Transplant Games, which showcase the sporting prowess of organ transplant recipients, aim to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation. Participants come from various backgrounds, each with their own compelling stories of survival and gratitude. Myla’s success at such a young age underscores the impact of organ donation, creating a powerful narrative that resonates with many families facing similar challenges.
As the event concluded, the Duffey family celebrated not only Myla’s athletic achievement but also the life-changing decision made by Naedean. Such stories highlight the critical need for organ donors and the profound difference they can make in the lives of others. As Laura noted, “We need to talk about organ donation.”
Myla’s story continues to inspire those within the transplant community and beyond, illustrating the strength of human connections and the hope that comes from acts of kindness.
