He succumbed to injuries following an assault that occurred on the evening of August 1, 2023. Emergency services were called to Mill Park shortly after reports of violence, but Mr. Algasim was pronounced dead at 12:01 p.m. on the following day.
The EF International Language Campuses, where Mr. Algasim was enrolled for a ten-week program, expressed their deep sorrow regarding the loss of their student. In a statement, the school emphasized their commitment to student safety, noting that they are “working closely” with local police as the investigation unfolds.
Chas Corrigan, a 21-year-old from Cambridge, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. Another individual, a 50-year-old man from Cambridge, remains in custody on suspicion of assisting an offender. The police have indicated that the attack was an isolated incident involving a member of the public.
In their statement, EF International Language Campuses Cambridge said:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our adult students was fatally injured on Friday night in a public space. Emergency services responded immediately, but the student tragically passed away. We are working closely with the local police, who are investigating the incident and have confirmed they made arrests. The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority.”
The school has arranged counselling sessions for students and staff affected by this incident. They also extended their support to Mr. Algasim’s family and friends during this incredibly challenging time.
The police investigation continues, and the school has stated that they will refrain from further comments while it is ongoing. Local authorities have urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as they work to ensure safety in the area.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and the impact of violence in communities. As investigations proceed, the focus remains on supporting those affected and seeking justice for Mr. Algasim.
