Homeware Store Opens in Maidstone as More Retailers Join

A new homeware store has opened in the Fremlin Walk shopping centre in Maidstone, UK, marking a significant moment for the area’s retail landscape. The store, named Home Store, has taken over the former Zara unit and is currently offering a “special opening” sale with discounts of up to 50% on various items, including curtains, cushions, decor, and kitchenware.
The closure of Zara in December 2023 was a considerable setback for Maidstone, particularly during the festive shopping season. The fashion retailer’s sudden exit, along with the earlier departure of Quiz, which closed 23 of its stores due to insolvency, left a significant void in the shopping centre.
New Arrivals and Changes
In addition to Home Store, health food chain Holland & Barrett is set to join the Fremlin Walk shopping centre. The retailer has submitted a planning application to Maidstone Council for new signage on its shopfront. The application, lodged last week, includes plans for glass-mounted lettering and an illuminated hanging sign featuring the company’s logo.
Earlier this year, the Danish homeware and lifestyle brand Sostrene Grene opened its second store in Kent at the same shopping centre. This establishment, located in the former Laura Ashley unit next to Frasers, offers a variety of products, from soft furnishings and kitchenware to seasonal decorations and children’s toys.
Shifts in the Retail Environment
The recent changes in Fremlin Walk highlight a broader shift in the retail environment, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. The departure of Jamaica Blue, which replaced the former Patisserie Valerie, illustrates ongoing challenges faced by food and beverage outlets. The bakery chain closed unexpectedly in February, leaving no branches in Kent.
While the arrival of Home Store and upcoming new retailers like Holland & Barrett provide a fresh start for the shopping centre, the community remains hopeful for sustained growth and revitalization in the area. The changes reflect both the resilience of the retail sector and the evolving preferences of consumers in Maidstone.
