McCullough Library Celebrates Summer Reading Success with Fundraising Boost
On August 30, 2023, the John G. McCullough Free Library in North Bennington marked a significant achievement in its summer reading program, gathering community members to celebrate exceeding reading goals. The event took place on the scenic lawn of the Park McCullough Mansion, where library staff expressed their excitement over the results of the reading initiative.
The summer reading program concluded with impressive outcomes. A challenge from the Bank of Bennington and an anonymous donor incentivized the community to surpass last year’s reading minutes. Both donors pledged $1,500 each, contingent upon exceeding last summer’s total of 174,966 minutes. The community responded enthusiastically, collectively reading for a remarkable 322,055 minutes, resulting in a total donation of $3,000 to the library’s Equity and Sustainability Campaign.
The celebration featured performances by Jeh Kulu, a traditional West African drumming and dance ensemble from Burlington. Attendees enjoyed free frozen treats from the Bennington Police Department’s Copsicle Wagon, creating a festive atmosphere. During the event, three lucky participants won grand prize baskets themed around outdoor activities, movies, and art. Additionally, all children present received a free book to take home.
According to Martha Bradford, the youth services librarian, the increase in reading minutes was a clear indicator of success. “The McCullough Library had their End of Summer Reading Celebration, and all community members were invited to celebrate the accomplishments of young readers this summer,” Bradford stated. The library registered 164 young participants for the Summer Reading Challenge, a notable increase from the previous year.
The library’s director, Jenny Rozycki, expressed enthusiasm about the fundraising progress. The library aims to raise $500,000 by the end of January 2024. With nearly $440,000 raised by the end of August, the additional $3,000 brings the library closer to their goal. Rozycki remarked, “This is exciting stuff,” highlighting the need for a few more fundraising efforts to reach the target.
Community members can track the fundraising progress by visiting the library, where a thermometer chart is displayed near the front desk. Bradford also encourages local youth to participate in the library’s Saturday storytime sessions at 11 a.m., featuring stories, songs, crafts, and snacks.
As September marks Library Card Sign-up Month, adults who register or renew their accounts will automatically be entered into a drawing for a canvas library tote filled with local goodies. Young readers who obtain their library cards will receive a colorful water bottle sticker.
The John G. McCullough Free Library is located at 2 Main Street in North Bennington. For more information on upcoming programs and events, visit mcculloughlibrary.org.
