Major Road Repairs Set for A1 Following Fatal Crash

Motorists in the Peterborough area face significant disruptions as repair work on the A1 southbound is set to commence following a fatal accident. The work, initiated by National Highways, aims to restore two lanes on the damaged section of the road over Billing Brook at Water Newton. The project is expected to last through several weekends, beginning on September 12, 2023, and will involve temporary speed restrictions and lane closures.

The urgent repairs follow a serious incident involving a large agricultural vehicle, which caused damage to the culvert supporting the carriageway. Since late last year, one lane of the southbound carriageway has remained closed for safety reasons, affecting traffic flow in the area.

National Highways plans to temporarily realign the southbound carriageway to facilitate the restoration of two operational lanes. During the initial phases of the repair work, a 40mph speed limit will be enforced. This restriction will remain in effect even after the carriageway reopens, as traffic is expected to navigate through narrower lanes.

Details of the Repair Schedule

The repair work will unfold over seven weekends, with full closures planned from September 12 to late October. These closures will occur from 21:00 on Friday evenings to 05:00 on Monday mornings, contingent on weather conditions. Fortunately, there will be no scheduled weeknight closures during this period.

Preparation work is set to begin overnight on September 1, which will aid in minimizing disruptions during the major repair phase. Once both lanes are operational, further work is scheduled to repair the damaged culvert, slated for completion in 2026-27.

Detour Information for Motorists

To guide drivers around the closed sections, a diversion route has been established. Motorists are advised to exit the A1 at Wansford Interchange onto the A47, then exit at Thorpewood Interchange onto the A1260. They should continue on the A1260 to Hampton Roundabout, turn right onto the A1139, and rejoin the A1/A1(M) at Fletton Parkway Interchange.

National Highways is prioritizing safety throughout this operation, emphasizing the need for caution as work progresses. With the ongoing repairs, motorists are encouraged to stay informed and plan their journeys accordingly.
