Moray Libraries Launch Powerful Research Tools for Members
Moray Council has introduced two significant research tools to enhance the resources available to library members. The addition of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition allows users to delve into extensive historical records and explore family histories.
The British Newspaper Archive is now accessible at all local libraries, enabling members to conduct free searches and view millions of newspaper articles from around the world. This resource opens a window to the past, allowing individuals to explore historical events and societal changes through the lens of journalism.
In tandem with this, the Ancestry Library Edition provides users the opportunity to trace their family history. This tool includes vital UK records such as births, deaths, marriages, military service, and more, featuring comprehensive databases including UK census records, parish records, and immigration and emigration documentation.
Access to these powerful research tools is facilitated through library computers, which are available for free use. To ensure availability, booking in advance is recommended. Alternatively, users can connect to public Wi-Fi and access these resources on their personal devices.
Community Response and Benefits
The introduction of these digital resources has been met with enthusiasm from local officials. Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed her delight at the initiative. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
This initiative not only enriches the library experience for community members but also underscores the role of local libraries in preserving history and facilitating personal research. With these new tools, Moray libraries position themselves as vital resources for both historical exploration and genealogical research.
As users begin to take advantage of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, Moray Council anticipates an increase in engagement and usage of library services. This move reflects a broader trend in libraries adapting to the digital age, providing residents with easy access to a wealth of information and resources that were previously more difficult to obtain.
The future looks promising for library users in Moray, with these tools set to enhance their research capabilities significantly. As the community embraces these new offerings, the potential for personal discovery and historical understanding is greater than ever.
