Putin and Xi Discuss Organ Transplants and Longevity During Parade

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were caught discussing organ transplants and the potential for humans to live longer during a military parade in Beijing. This conversation, captured by a hot microphone, occurred on March 15, 2024, as the leaders walked alongside Kim Jong Un of North Korea, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The event was broadcasted by China’s state-run CCTV, which reported an audience of 1.9 billion views online and over 400 million viewers on television.
As the three leaders approached the Tiananmen rostrum to observe the parade, a translator for Putin relayed his comments in Chinese, stating, “Biotechnology is continuously developing.” The translator further noted, “Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and (you can) even achieve immortality.” In response, Xi, who was off camera, remarked, “Some predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old.”
Putin later confirmed to reporters that the discussion had taken place. “I think when we went to the parade, the chairman talked about it,” he said. Putin elaborated on the advancements in health technology, emphasizing that modern medical techniques provide hope for an extended active life.
Responses and Reactions
The discussion raised eyebrows internationally, particularly regarding the implications of such advancements in biotechnology. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CCTV did not respond to requests from Reuters for immediate comment on the conversation.
As the leaders continued their walk, the audio faded as Xi began to speak to the crowd. Approximately 30 seconds later, they reappeared on camera, walking towards the viewing platform. During the parade, Xi addressed more than 50,000 spectators, asserting that the world faced a choice between “peace or war” while showcasing China’s military capabilities, which included hypersonic missiles and naval drones.
Putin’s visit to China coincided with a summit featuring over 20 leaders from non-Western countries, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders signed over 20 agreements, covering topics from energy to artificial intelligence, including plans for a significant new gas pipeline. However, the specifics regarding financing and pricing for the gas destined for China were not disclosed.
This candid interaction between Putin and Xi highlights the growing collaboration between Russia and China, particularly in areas of emerging technology and health science. As nations increasingly explore the potential of biotechnology, the conversation between these leaders may signal a shift in how longevity and health advancements are perceived on the global stage.
