Marko Lazetic Shines as Aberdeen Secures Cup Final Spot
Aberdeen FC advanced to the final of the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup following a thrilling 4-2 victory over Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park. The standout performance came from Marko Lazetic, who scored twice in the first half, helping the Dons establish a commanding lead.
Lazetic opened the scoring in the fifth minute, converting a penalty with a stylish Panenka after being fouled by Sam Morrison. The visitors quickly built on their momentum, with Dylan Lobban doubling the lead in the 27th minute. A well-placed cross from Ryan Duncan found Lobban, who struck low past Buckie’s goalkeeper, Euan Storrier.
The Dons were not finished yet. In the 42nd minute, Lazetic found the net again, displaying impressive composure as he rounded Storrier to extend Aberdeen’s advantage to 3-0 just before the half-time whistle.
Buckie Thistle responded with determination after the break. Sam Morrison scored with a header from a corner in the 53rd minute, giving the home side a glimmer of hope. As the match progressed, Buckie’s intensity increased, leading to Darryl McHardy scoring their second goal in the 78th minute, creating a tense finish.
Despite Buckie’s resurgence, Aberdeen managed to secure their victory in the dying moments of the match. In the 89th minute, Joseph Teasdale broke away and executed a perfectly timed chip over Storrier, sealing the game at 4-2.
Coach Stuart Duff expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging the challenges posed by Buckie Thistle. “Credit to Buckie, they came out and showed what a good side they are by asking questions of our young defence in the second half,” he noted. Duff highlighted the importance of the first half’s clinical finishing and the learning experience for his younger players, stating, “It’s good for them to go through that adversity and have that challenge.”
Aberdeen’s victory sets up a final showdown against Formartine United, promising to be an exciting clash. With a mix of youth and experience on the pitch, the Dons will aim to build on their successful cup run.
The match showcased the talents of Aberdeen’s recent summer signings. Along with Lazetic, Mitchel Frame and Emmanuel Gyamfi made their first appearances, contributing to a dynamic team effort.
As the team prepares for the final, the focus will be on tightening their defensive strategies while maintaining the attacking flair that led to their impressive cup performance.
