Rhyne Howard Sets WNBA Record with Nine 3-Pointers Again

Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard made history on August 25, 2023, by tying the WNBA single-game record for three-pointers made, sinking nine shots from beyond the arc in a commanding 104-85 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. With this performance, Howard became the first player in league history to achieve this feat more than once, previously accomplishing it on June 13 against the Chicago Sky.
Howard’s remarkable performance included a total of 37 points while shooting 13-of-26 overall and 9-of-17 from three-point range. Her achievement not only highlighted her unique talent but also secured home-court advantage for the Dream in the upcoming playoff rounds. The team’s success was also underscored by their collective effort, as they matched the regular-season record for three-pointers made in a game with 19, tying with the New York Liberty.
Howard’s Journey and Impact on the Dream
This season has been challenging for Howard, who has battled injuries, missing 11 games, including the WNBA All-Star Game. She returned to the court on August 10, 2023, and has since been a vital contributor to the Dream’s success, currently leading the team with 97 three-pointers. The 25-year-old credited her first-year coach Karl Smesko for implementing an offensive system that aligns with her strengths. Smesko, known for his successful tenure at Florida Gulf Coast University, has successfully translated his style into the WNBA, emphasizing three-point shooting and layups.
“I knew it was going to be great for me,” Howard stated, reflecting on Smesko’s approach. “Everybody knows I like threes. I’m going to get them up, but the fact that I can still continue to hit them consistently, that’s the most important part.”
Team Performance and Playoff Outlook
Despite the absence of fellow All-Star guard Allisha Gray, who has also excelled with 93 three-pointers this season, the Dream have surged, winning six of their last seven games. Currently, Atlanta holds a record of 28-14, positioning them competitively for the playoffs. They are aiming for the No. 2 seed, trailing only behind Minnesota, which has already clinched the top spot. The Las Vegas Aces and Phoenix are closely following with matching records of 27-14.
The upcoming postseason marks a significant moment for the Dream, as it will be their first home playoff game since September 4, 2018. The team previously struggled in the playoffs, failing to qualify from 2019 to 2022 and losing early rounds in the last two seasons. This year, the WNBA has introduced a new playoff format, ensuring that each team will have at least one home game, further enhancing the excitement for fans and players alike.
As the playoffs approach, the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on Rhyne Howard, whose exceptional skills continue to elevate the Atlanta Dream and inspire discussions about her place among the league’s elite shooters.
