Doctor Advocates Daily Turmeric Use for Arthritis and Depression Relief
A widely used kitchen ingredient, turmeric, priced at approximately £0.50, is being highlighted by health professionals as a beneficial remedy for conditions such as arthritis and depression. Medical expert Dr. Eric Berg, who has amassed a following of over 14 million on YouTube and more than two million on TikTok, suggests that incorporating turmeric into one’s diet for just two weeks can significantly reduce inflammation and potentially enhance mental health.
In a recent video, Dr. Berg posed the question: “What would happen if you consume turmeric for 14 days?” He asserts that anyone suffering from inflammation would experience notable relief. This positive effect is attributed to curcumin, the primary active component of turmeric, which Dr. Berg describes as “one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories.” He further states, “Any of the itis, bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, turmeric can help,” and claims that the spice also serves as a natural antidepressant while assisting in liver detoxification.
The NHS reports that over 10 million people in the UK are affected by arthritis, while depression impacts one in six adults at various points in their lives. These statistics explain the growing interest in natural remedies like turmeric. Research supports the notion that turmeric has measurable anti-inflammatory properties. A review published in the journal Foods indicates that curcumin can effectively lower inflammation markers in various clinical trials. However, researchers note that its bioavailability, or absorption rate, may be limited without the inclusion of enhancers such as black pepper.
Dr. Berg emphasizes that turmeric is not only an anti-inflammatory but also a “powerful antioxidant” and an “immune modulator.” According to the NHS, antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, and preliminary laboratory studies suggest that curcumin may influence immune responses. Nevertheless, the need for extensive human studies remains critical to validate these findings.
In terms of mental health benefits, a meta-analysis published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that curcumin supplementation produced small to moderate improvements in symptoms of depression compared to placebo. Researchers caution that turmeric should not replace prescribed antidepressants, underscoring the necessity for further research into its efficacy.
Dr. Berg also posits that turmeric may enhance levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), sometimes referred to as “miracle grow for your brain.” The Alzheimer’s Society highlights the importance of BDNF in promoting the growth and survival of nerve cells, linking decreased levels of this factor to conditions such as depression and neurodegenerative diseases.
Responses to Dr. Berg’s recommendations have been varied. One user commented, “Been taking turmeric daily for five years,” while another expressed gratitude for the advice. However, some caution is warranted, as one follower noted, “it does interfere with some medications.”
Experts generally agree that turmeric is safe for most individuals when used in cooking, although high-dose supplements may interact with certain medications. As a precaution, the NHS advises consulting a general practitioner before starting any new supplements, particularly for those with existing health conditions or individuals taking regular medications.
The growing body of evidence surrounding turmeric’s potential health benefits continues to attract attention, making it a subject of interest for those seeking natural remedies for common ailments.
