Surge in ‘Lunch Hour’ Breast Augmentation Procedures Raises Concerns
A new trend in cosmetic surgery is emerging, capturing the attention of women seeking rapid breast enhancements. Dubbed the “lunch hour boob job,” this procedure offers an increase of up to three cup sizes within just 15 minutes. While women in cities like New York and Florida are embracing this quick fix, the risks associated with it are drawing scrutiny from medical professionals.
Patients can expect to pay between $3,000 and $5,000 for this procedure, significantly less than the typical cost of permanent breast implants, which can reach around $7,000. Despite its appeal, the results are temporary, lasting only about 24 hours. This has not deterred many from seeking the treatment, particularly before significant events such as weddings, photoshoots, and gatherings.
The procedure, also known as “Instabreasts,” involves injecting saline into the breast tissue, a method that is not FDA approved. Reports indicate that the process can be painful and carries risks of bruising, swelling, and even serious complications. For example, Dr. Bob Basu, a plastic surgeon and President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cautions that rapid inflation of breast tissue may lead to complications such as infection or compromised blood flow.
Despite these warnings, many women are turning to this procedure to enhance their appearance. Dr. Norman Rowe, who pioneered the technique over a decade ago, claims to have performed more than 1,000 of these injections. He notes the popularity of the procedure among various demographics, including brides, influencers, and women preparing for first dates. “You get all types of women who just want to get a quick, larger breast,” Dr. Rowe stated.
Among the women who have undergone this procedure is Amanda Sanders, a mother and image consultant. At 41, she sought the injections to enhance her “very shallow C cup” before a romantic trip. “It was worth it,” she commented, emphasizing the importance of appearance in her profession. Similarly, OnlyFans model Kayla Kaden shared her experience with saline injections, revealing that her breasts appeared dramatically larger for about 12 hours before returning to their original size.
Dr. Rowe’s clinic offers appointments that last no more than an hour, with the actual injection process taking only 15 to 20 minutes. During the procedure, a needle is inserted into the underside of the breast, where approximately 1.5 cups of saline is injected into the milk ducts. The fluid, similar to body saline, is absorbed over time, which is part of the appeal for many women.
While some enjoy the benefits, experts like Dr. Gregory Greco warn that the injections can lead to asymmetrical results and other health risks. He also states that the lack of FDA clearance underscores the potential dangers associated with the procedure. As the trend grows, the medical community is urging women to weigh the risks carefully before opting for such treatments.
Dr. Rowe is already exploring a new formula that could extend the duration of the augmentation, aiming to introduce a “vacation breast” procedure that would last five to seven days. As cosmetic enhancements continue to evolve, the balance between aesthetics and safety remains a crucial conversation for prospective patients and medical professionals alike.
