Four individuals have received the prestigious Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit in a ceremony held at HMS CAMBRIA in Cardiff. The awards were presented by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, Morfudd Meredith, in recognition of their exceptional service and dedication.

The recipients of this honour include Lieutenant Rhys Thomas from HMS CAMBRIA, Fraser Ingram and Abigail Gibbins from the Cardiff Sea Cadet Corps, and Squadron Leader Rhys-Thomas Challenger from No 3 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets. Each individual was recognised for their commitment to their respective roles, demonstrating outstanding leadership and a strong sense of duty.

Celebrating Cadet Achievements

The ceremony also highlighted the achievements of three notable cadets. Petty Officer Cadet Nathan of the Penarth Sea Cadet Corps, Leading Cadet Dylan of the Cardiff Sea Cadet Corps, and Cadet Warrant Officer Naina Luchman of 1344 (Cardiff) Squadron, No 1 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets have been selected for the esteemed role of Lord-Lieutenant’s cadet. This prestigious position allows cadets to participate in various official duties alongside the Lord-Lieutenant, representing the monarchy at formal events such as remembrance ceremonies, royal visits, and parades. Their tenure will continue until September.

At the event, Cadet Warrant Officer Ashton Marchant, a former Lord-Lieutenant’s cadet, shared his journey. He has transitioned into a role as an adult volunteer with the No 3 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets, now serving as a sergeant. His narrative underscored the personal and professional growth opportunities available within the cadet programme.

Impact of the Cadet Programme

Across Wales, nearly 4,500 cadets engage in a variety of activities, developing valuable skills and qualifications through their participation in community initiatives and practical experiences. This extensive programme is facilitated by 1,850 dedicated adult instructors and civilian assistants who volunteer their time on evenings and weekends.

The awards ceremony saw an attendance of nearly 80 individuals and was organised by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales, an organisation that has been supporting the Armed Forces for over a century. Their commitment to fostering youth engagement and leadership development continues to play a significant role in shaping the future of young individuals in the community.
