Camilla Hosts Star-Studded Reception with Paddington Bear

In a delightful celebration of creativity, Camilla hosted a reception at Windsor Castle where she met the beloved character Paddington Bear. The event, held to mark the BBC 500 Words competition, brought together numerous celebrities and literary figures, all united by a passion for encouraging children’s writing.

The competition, which attracted over 46,000 entries this year, aims to inspire children from across the UK to express themselves through storytelling. Winners will be announced during a special episode of the BBC’s The One Show on March 6. At the reception, Camilla presented medals to participants and engaged with Paddington, who was dressed in his iconic blue duffle coat and red hat. During their meeting, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “Hello Paddington – how very nice to meet you, thank you very much for coming.”

Paddington’s charm shone through as he enthusiastically agreed to share his beloved marmalade sandwiches with the children in attendance. Guests were later treated to sandwiches served on plates adorned with red hats, a nod to the bear’s signature look.

The late Queen Elizabeth II had a special connection to Paddington Bear, famously appearing in a sketch with him during her Platinum Jubilee celebration. In that memorable moment, she shared that she kept marmalade sandwiches in her handbag, a detail that endeared both characters to the public. Following her passing in 2022, mourners honored her memory by leaving Paddington toys and marmalade sandwiches outside Buckingham Palace.

The event was graced by various celebrities, including actress Joanna Page, Peep Show actor Paterson Joseph, rapper Big Zuu, and Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker. DJ Sara Cox, who will host a special BBC 500 Words segment on her Radio 2 Book Club next week, was also in attendance.

During the reception, Paterson Joseph expressed appreciation for Camilla’s efforts in promoting literacy, stating, “Thank you for all you are doing for literacy. There’s been a big drop since Covid.” The Queen engaged in conversation with Big Zuu, inquiring if he was still cooking. He responded with enthusiasm, promising, “I will cook for you soon, one day.”

Bradley Walsh praised Camilla’s dedication to the BBC 500 Words competition, which she has supported for more than a decade, calling it “a wonderful thing.” His son, Barney, added, “The creativity of the children is unbelievable.”

In a bid to further encourage young writers, Camilla also met judges of the competition, including comedian Sir Lenny Henry, acclaimed author Malorie Blackman, and actress Rose Ayling-Ellis. Previously, the Queen had sat down with them at Buckingham Palace to discuss the shortlisted stories, demonstrating her commitment to fostering a love of reading and writing among children.

The reception was a vivid reminder of the importance of storytelling and creativity in children’s lives, with Paddington Bear serving as a delightful ambassador for this vital cause.
