Zvrko Emphasizes Unity in Montenegro Amid Identity Disputes
Elvir Zvrko, a member of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), has asserted the importance of unity in Montenegro, emphasizing that despite the existence of diverse layers of identity, the country remains a common home for its citizens. In a recent post on social media platform X, Zvrko addressed ongoing tensions between the Bosniak Party (BS) and other political factions in Montenegro, sparked by comments from BS representative Kenana Strujic-Harbic regarding the relationship between Montenegrins and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Strujic-Harbic stated that “Bosnia is the cultural and national home, while Montenegro is the state and homeland,” during an interview with the daily newspaper Pobjeda. Her remarks highlighted the disconnect between Bosniaks in Montenegro and their interactions with Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Strujic-Harbic noting a lack of communication even on a monthly basis.
In response, Zvrko reiterated that Montenegro’s civic character must be defended against attempts at ethnofederalism and shifting loyalties towards other nations. He emphasized the importance of believing in the future of Montenegro, stating, “No matter how broad our identities may be, there is one mother state. Montenegro.”
The dialogue surrounding national identity in Montenegro reflects deeper societal issues as various communities navigate their historical ties and present-day realities. Zvrko’s statements call for a collective commitment to the nation, urging all citizens to focus on the shared responsibility of safeguarding Montenegro’s integrity.
As discussions continue, the political landscape remains charged, with identity and loyalty at the forefront of public discourse. The contrasting views from leaders like Zvrko and Strujic-Harbic underscore the complexities of national identity in a region marked by diverse histories and cultures.
