Man Honors Late Mother’s Promise with Gerard Gardens Reunion
A man from Liverpool is fulfilling a promise made to his mother 15 years ago by organizing a reunion for former residents of the now-demolished Gerard Gardens housing estate. Bobby Parry, 58, aims to bring together people who shared the vibrant community life of the estate, which stood in the city centre for five decades until its demolition in the late 1980s.
Bobby Parry’s connection to Gerard Gardens runs deep. In 2010, he successfully organized a reunion for residents, an event he described as “amazing.” While dancing with his mother that night, he assured her he would continue to host reunions annually. Tragically, shortly after the event, his mother passed away following a brief battle with cancer. Overwhelmed by grief, Bobby found it difficult to keep his promise until now.
Memories of a Cherished Community
Gerard Gardens, known for its distinctive curved design and affectionately dubbed “the Bullring,” was home to hundreds of families. Bobby was born at number seven and spent his formative years there, engaging in what he called “all kinds of mischief” with his childhood friends. Reflecting on those years, he shared, “It was a fabulous place to live, honestly the best place.”
Bobby fondly remembers the community spirit that thrived during festive seasons. “Christmas time down there was always one of my favourite times of year. Everyone’s front doors would be left wide open, and people would be coming in and out of each other’s houses,” he recalled. He emphasized the warmth of the community during gatherings, stating, “There would be do’s on every Friday and Saturday too.”
His experiences were filled with adventure, from spending long days in the estate’s square to enjoying the newly installed floodlights that allowed children to play after dark. “Honestly, it was amazing. The best place to live. When we moved out, it broke my heart. I swear I even suffered depression when we moved out; I was only 11,” Bobby said.
Bringing the Past to Life Again
With memories rekindled, Bobby has reached out to former residents of Gerard Gardens, engaging in conversations that have sparked excitement about reuniting. “I have recently been seeing people who lived on the estate, and we have been talking about the memories. Seeing their eyes light up when we speak about it has just made me want to do another reunion to get everyone back together again,” he explained.
The reunion is scheduled for August 8, 2026, at the Sylvestrian Leisure Centre in Vauxhall. Bobby encourages anyone with ties to Gerard Gardens to join the celebration and reconnect with old friends. For more details, individuals can reach out to Bobby through a dedicated Facebook group created for the event.
As the community prepares to come together once more, Bobby Parry’s commitment to honoring his mother’s memory continues to inspire those who once called Gerard Gardens home.
