Irish Community Care Celebrates 60 Years of Support in Liverpool

Irish Community Care (ICC) in Liverpool is celebrating over 60 years of providing essential support to the Irish community. Located at 151 Dale Street, this registered charity has evolved significantly since its inception in the 1960s. Originally part of the old Irish Centre on Mount Pleasant, ICC was established to assist newly arrived Irish immigrants facing isolation and uncertainty in a foreign city. Today, its mission remains vital, addressing the ongoing needs of thousands.

Breege McDaid, the director of ICC, emphasizes the charity’s commitment to connecting people and ensuring their well-being. “There is a lot of need for us, and we are responding to that need,” she stated. With around 75% of Liverpool’s population claiming Irish ancestry, the charity plays a crucial role in promoting Irish culture and heritage while offering various services.

Comprehensive Services for the Community

ICC provides a wide range of assistance, including guidance on passport and birth certificate applications, housing support, and cultural activities. McDaid noted that the charity’s services encompass all stages of life, saying, “Your Irishness is as important in your dying as it is in your living.” The organization’s long-standing dedication to the community is reflected in its diverse offerings, which cater to both newcomers and established residents.

As St Patrick’s Day approaches on March 17, 2024, ICC is preparing for a week of celebrations. This day holds significant meaning for the Irish community, as it serves as a time for reflection and connection. McDaid shared, “St Patrick’s Day is a great event and it’s a really important day for every single Irish person.”

In addition to festivities, ICC is launching a new initiative called the Power of Music. This program aims to provide gentle music therapy sessions for individuals experiencing memory loss and their families, fostering a supportive environment through shared experiences. The first session will coincide with St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

The charity’s impact resonates through various community groups, such as the Wirral Irish group, which boasts over 150 members. These gatherings foster friendships and create a sense of belonging among older adults who enjoy music and dance. For many, ICC is more than just a service provider; it has become a lifeline.

Geraldine Judge, ICC’s Advice and Advocacy lead, reflected on the profound moments that define her work. “When someone comes back to you after using a service and they say ‘thanks for helping me, where would I be without you?’ or ‘you saved my life,’ there is no feeling like it,” she explained. Judge, who has been with ICC for 22 years, highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the community, including health issues and ongoing instances of anti-Irish racism.

Wendy Charlton, the governance manager at ICC, emphasized the trust that community members place in the organization. “We offer a listening ear; people can trust us,” she said. Charlton’s experience at ICC has opened her eyes to the daily struggles faced by many, reinforcing the charity’s critical role in the lives of individuals seeking support.

As ICC looks towards the future, its team remains dedicated to helping those who arrive in Liverpool without family or support. McDaid reiterated the charity’s mission: “We want to help people settle and have a fulfilled life. We want people to have better opportunities and a better life for themselves and their families.”
