Liverpool Backs Florian Wirtz as He Seeks Impact Against United
Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz is yet to make a significant impact since his high-profile transfer from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million this summer. Despite his struggles to register goals or assists, both Liverpool manager Arne Slot and centre-back Virgil van Dijk have voiced their support for the young German ahead of a crucial match against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
Since arriving at Anfield, Wirtz has faced criticism, particularly from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who suggested the midfielder should be benched. Nonetheless, no player in the Premier League has created more opportunities than Wirtz in all competitions this season.
Slot defended Wirtz’s performance, indicating that his lack of direct contributions can be misleading. “If you’ve been brought in for so much money, people look mainly at goals and assists, but I can tell you he could be on six or seven assists already,” Slot told Sky Sports. He highlighted a notable moment from a recent match against Chelsea, where Wirtz provided a brilliant flick to teammate Mohamed Salah, who unfortunately hit the post.
Wirtz’s adjustment to the Premier League has been challenging, typical for a player transitioning to a new country and league. Slot emphasized the importance of patience, stating, “He’s been a bit unlucky with the finishing when he’s given his teammates chances, but, in general for a 22-year-old, it’s quite normal that you have to adjust.”
Van Dijk also spoke about the significance of settling into a new environment. “The main thing is when new players are coming in, as when I came in for a lot of money, is that you feel welcomed,” he noted. “If that is good, then you’ll be able to excel.”
The Dutch defender acknowledged that adaptability is crucial, especially in a demanding environment like Liverpool. “Every day that goes by in training or the games is another opportunity to get close together,” Van Dijk added, emphasizing the collective effort required for improvement.
As Wirtz prepares for the high-stakes clash against Manchester United, he will seek to shift the narrative surrounding his performance. Liverpool fans are hopeful that the young midfielder will finally find his rhythm and contribute to the team’s success in one of the season’s most anticipated fixtures.
