Little Girl’s Leg Pain Leads to Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
A three-year-old girl named Baileigh Shanks from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, faced a devastating diagnosis after her complaints of leg pain were initially dismissed as growing pains. In a tragic turn of events, Baileigh was diagnosed with terminal cancer, specifically metastatic neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that predominantly affects young children.
In 2023, Baileigh began experiencing discomfort in her leg. Her mother, Vicky Shanks, explained that the pain escalated quickly from mild to severe, prompting her to seek medical advice. Initially reassured by a general practitioner that it was likely just growing pains, the family grew concerned as Baileigh’s condition deteriorated. Vicky sought further examination, leading to referrals to Wishaw Hospital and subsequently to Queen Elizabeth Children’s Hospital in Glasgow, where the harsh reality of Baileigh’s condition was revealed.
The diagnosis was a shock to the family. Vicky described the moment they learned of Baileigh’s cancer: “In two weeks it went from a sore leg to finding out she had cancer. Your heart just sinks. When you first hear it, it is just a mumble of words.” The family was devastated to learn that Baileigh’s cancer had already metastasized, meaning it had spread beyond its original site.
Since the diagnosis, Baileigh has undergone intensive chemotherapy treatments. Tragically, the family was informed that the cancer had spread to her brain, marking a significant turning point in their fight against the disease. As Vicky noted, “There are so many new tumours in her brain, so we have been told to take each day as it comes.”
Despite the circumstances, Baileigh has shown remarkable resilience throughout her treatment. Vicky praised her daughter’s bravery, stating, “She has been an absolute trooper… For someone so young, spending half her life dealing with this stuff, she genuinely gets on with it. It is so inspiring.” Baileigh has even approached her situation with a sense of normalcy, referring to her cancer as if it were merely a cold.
The family has been striving to create wonderful memories during this difficult time, including plans for a themed birthday party centered around Baileigh’s favorite character, Wednesday Addams, as she approaches her sixth birthday. In response to their situation, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help the family focus on spending quality time together without the stress of financial burdens. Vicky expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “The fact people are raising money to help is amazing. It means we can focus on looking after her.”
Baileigh’s journey has not only impacted her immediate family but also her eight-year-old sister, Skyler Shanks. Vicky shared that it has been difficult for Skyler to understand why one parent is often absent due to hospital visits. The family has faced numerous challenges, including restrictions that prevent them from engaging in typical childhood activities, such as going to play areas, due to the risk of infection.
As they navigate this heartbreaking journey, the Shanks family continues to cherish each day, leaning on the kindness of strangers and the strength of their bond. The support from the community has been invaluable, offering a glimmer of hope during an incredibly challenging time.
