Royal Family Removes Prince Andrew’s Banner in Historic Move
The Royal Family has taken a significant step by removing the banner of Prince Andrew, which displayed his coat of arms, from Windsor Castle. This banner, previously located next to that of Prince William inside St George’s Chapel, was first raised in 2006 when Andrew was appointed as a Knight of the Order of the Garter, a prestigious chivalric order established in the 14th century. The action marks a rare occurrence, typically reserved for situations involving high treason or rebellion against the Crown.
The removal comes in the wake of increasing scrutiny surrounding Prince Andrew, who has faced mounting pressure due to his connections with the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Just last week, Andrew relinquished his Duke of York title and his membership in the Order of the Garter, a move that underscores the severity of his situation. Photographs published by the *Sun* show the banner still on display on Saturday but absent by Wednesday, signalling a swift decision.
In related developments, Downing Street announced that Members of Parliament (MPs) would not be granted time in the House of Commons to discuss Andrew’s conduct. The government stated it prefers that Parliament focus on “important issues.” While MPs could potentially address Andrew’s association with Epstein and his rent-free residence, this would require a formal motion, and the government controls most parliamentary time.
The Public Accounts Committee is currently seeking further information regarding the lease arrangement for Andrew’s Royal Lodge in Windsor, where he has reportedly paid only “peppercorn rent” for over 20 years. Pressure has intensified for him to vacate the 30-room property after revelations from the posthumous memoir of his accuser, Virginia Giuffre, brought additional scrutiny to his circumstances.
The Committee plans to write to the Crown Estate and the Treasury to raise several questions about Andrew’s lease, further complicating his already precarious position. The growing public and political pressure on the royal family illustrates a significant shift in the perception of Prince Andrew’s role within the monarchy and the broader implications for the institution itself.
As this story continues to unfold, it highlights the evolving dynamics within the Royal Family and the impact of scandal on public perception and institutional reputation.
