Everton’s Dwight McNeil Faces January Exit Amid Rival Interest
Dwight McNeil’s future at Everton appears uncertain as he struggles to secure playing time under manager David Moyes. The winger has made only two appearances in the Premier League this season, with his most recent match featuring just a four-minute cameo during the absence of teammate Jack Grealish against Manchester City. This limited role has led to speculation that McNeil could leave the club as early as January, with Nottingham Forest reportedly interested in acquiring his services.
McNeil’s diminished status at Everton has become increasingly apparent, particularly after a disappointing performance for the under-21 team during the Vertu Trophy. The squad suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to League One side Bradford City, with McNeil among three senior players who started the match. This defeat has raised concerns about the player’s form and commitment, prompting further scrutiny of his place within the team.
Potential Move to Nottingham Forest
Former Everton scout Bryan King suggests that a transfer might be imminent for McNeil, particularly given the interest from his former manager, Sean Dyche. Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, King stated, “I think there’s a good chance that McNeil will move on in January.” He pointed out that although the U21 squad included a mix of young talent and players on the brink of first-team action, the team’s inability to perform effectively raises questions about the attitudes of some senior players.
Last season, McNeil played a significant role, clocking in at **1,371** minutes in the Premier League. This season, however, he has managed only **23** minutes across all competitions, with his only start coming in the Carabao Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The stark contrast in his playing time underscores his current struggle to adapt to the team’s evolving dynamics.
Implications for Other Everton Players
McNeil is not the only Everton player facing an uncertain future. Right-back Nathan Patterson, who also participated in the U21 match against Bradford City, could be another candidate for a January exit. Patterson has yet to feature for the first team this season and is currently sidelined due to injury. His near move on loan during the summer transfer window may resurface as the club seeks to bolster its defensive options.
Moyes, who was not in charge during the U21 defeat, may find that the performance provides valuable insights into the attitudes of his players. As Everton navigates a challenging season, the potential departures of McNeil and Patterson could signify a larger shift in the squad aimed at reinvigorating team morale and performance.
As the January transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Everton, particularly regarding the futures of McNeil and Patterson. The club’s decisions may significantly impact their ongoing campaign and the overall morale of the squad.
