Rybakina Withdraws from Tokyo Semi-Final, Sparks Controversy
Elena Rybakina made headlines after withdrawing from the semi-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, which sparked criticism from former ATP players. Rybakina, a former Wimbledon champion, secured her place at the season-ending WTA Finals after a successful run, but her withdrawal raised eyebrows among fans and commentators alike.
Rybakina’s journey to the WTA Finals included a six-match winning streak, culminating in her victory at the Ningbo Open. The world No. 6 needed to reach the semi-finals in Tokyo to qualify for the prestigious tournament, which she accomplished. However, after advancing to the semi-finals, she announced her decision to withdraw, granting Linda Noskova a walkover into the final match.
In her statement, Rybakina cited ongoing issues with her back, explaining, “I’m very sorry I can’t play today. I have been having problems with my back this week and can’t play 100 percent.” This withdrawal comes as she prepares for the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where she aims to make her third consecutive appearance.
Despite Rybakina’s physical challenges, retired ATP players Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey voiced their disappointment over her decision. On the Nothing Major podcast, Johnson questioned her commitment, stating, “I don’t know. Make the semis and then just pull the rip cord like ‘I’ve made it. Screw you all’.” Querrey echoed this sentiment, expressing concern for the tournament’s integrity: “I hate being like, Oh, I feel bad for the tournament guy, but that does stink. Like make the semis and just dip out.”
Johnson acknowledged Rybakina’s effort in reaching the semi-finals, having defeated both Leylah Fernandez and Victoria Mboko, who had previously handed her tough losses. He remarked, “I would rather have her go out there and just lose one and one. Pulling out is hard to do… she beat two players who had beaten her earlier this year.”
In the aftermath of Rybakina’s withdrawal, Belinda Bencic went on to win the tournament, defeating Noskova in the final. As Rybakina prepares for the WTA Finals, she has been drawn into the Serena Williams Group, where she will compete against Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, and Madison Keys in round-robin matches. Meanwhile, the Stefanie Graf Group features Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Jasmine Paolini.
Rybakina’s decision to withdraw from the semi-finals has ignited a debate about player accountability and the implications of prioritizing health over competition. As she heads to Riyadh, fans and players alike will be watching closely to see how she performs in the WTA Finals.
