Ulster Rally Joins European Historic Championship for 2026

The Ulster International Rally will be a notable addition to the FIA European Historic Rally Championship in 2026, following a recent decision to include it in the Pre-2000 Championship series. This change comes as the Championship undergoes a significant restructuring, introducing seven new fixtures and emphasizing the event’s role in rallying heritage.

The announcement comes on the heels of an impressive performance by Callum Devine from Co Londonderry, who secured victory at the recent Ulster International Rally. Driving his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, Devine not only claimed first place but also clinched the Irish Tarmac Championship title for the second time. His success has drawn attention from officials at motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, who assessed the rally’s potential as a competitive venue.

The inclusion of the Ulster International Rally, known for its challenging tarmac roads, adds a new dynamic to the Championship. This event, set to take place on August 7 and 8, 2026, will feature iconic vehicles from the ‘Period K’ category, including the Peugeot 306 Maxi, Subaru Impreza, Ford Escort Cosworth, and Mitsubishi Lancer. The anticipation surrounding these vehicles is palpable, as they represent a cherished era in rallying history.

Significance of the Ulster Rally

Jamie Edwards, the FIA European Historic Rally Championship Sporting Delegate, expressed optimism about the Ulster Rally’s reception among drivers and teams. “The Ulster International Rally is renowned for its demanding tarmac roads and forms a very important part of Northern Ireland’s rich rallying heritage,” he stated. Edwards highlighted the event’s strategic location, making it more accessible for British and Irish competitors while also offering a unique challenge for those traveling from abroad.

The Pre-2000 Championship will kick off with the Rally Costa Brava on March 6-7, 2026, followed by several other notable events. These include the Historic Vltava Rally in the Czech Republic from April 24-26, and Switzerland’s Rallye du Chablais from May 28-30. The series will continue with the Ardeca Ypres Rally in Belgium on June 25-27 and the Rally Weiz Historic from July 16-18, before culminating in Italy with the Rally Elba Storico on September 24-26 and the Sanremo Rally Storico on October 16-17.
