Sponsored by People’s Postcode Lottery, this prestigious award recognizes the best contributions to journalism, including news channels, newspapers, magazines, and websites.
A panel of 70 judges participated in a voting process, assessing submitted entries based on their revelations, journalistic rigor, and overall impact. The selected finalists reflect a diverse range of reporting, highlighting significant stories that have shaped public discourse.
Finalists Showcase Diverse Reporting Excellence
Among the finalists, Channel 4 News stands out for its extensive investigation into serial abuser John Smyth, which prompted the resignation of Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. Additionally, reporter Paraic O’Brien was one of the first Western journalists to cover Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime. Furthermore, the outlet investigated allegations of systematic executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces.
Similarly, The Guardian contributed vital reporting, with Emma Graham-Harrison revealing how Israel withheld aid. The i Paper made headlines with its exposé of the UK Government’s homelessness minister, Rushanara Ali, who resigned after it was revealed that she increased rents on her property shortly after tenants vacated. This outlet also reported on funding cuts from the Trump administration that affected Yale University’s efforts to track Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. Additionally, a significant victory for the Save Britain’s Rivers campaign was reported, leading to the decision to scrap Ofwat following a government review.
Innovative Coverage and Investigative Journalism
Recognized for its impactful journalism, Sky News drew significant attention with an exclusive report by Tom Cheshire on a self-declared whites-only town in Arkansas, which received eight million views. An interview conducted by Yalda Hakim with Pakistan’s defence minister ignited international conversations about potential conflict with India. The network’s data and forensics team investigated the deaths of aid workers and the IDF’s misuse of civilian ambulances, while Sophy Ridge provided unprecedented access to Preston prison, highlighting issues within the justice system.
Finally, The Times and Sunday Times produced notable stories, including a report on parents of a child with special educational needs who were arrested after complaining about their daughter’s school. The investigation into Transport Secretary Louise Haigh‘s fraud conviction led to her resignation, while coverage of declining vaccine uptake among parents raised alarms about children’s health.
