Gout Drug Colchicine Could Lower Heart Attack and Stroke Risk
A recent study suggests that colchicine, a drug traditionally used to treat gout, may significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in individuals with cardiovascular disease. This finding could have implications for millions who are at risk, as the drug is both low-cost and widely available.
Researchers conducted a comprehensive review of 12 clinical trials involving nearly 23,000 participants with histories of heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. The studies focused on patients who took low doses of colchicine—0.5 mg once or twice daily—for a minimum of six months. The participants were predominantly male, with an average age ranging from 57 to 74 years.
The results indicated that those receiving colchicine experienced fewer cardiovascular events. Specifically, for every 1,000 people treated with the drug, there were nine fewer heart attacks and eight fewer strokes compared to those not taking the medication. While some patients reported mild stomach or digestive side effects, no serious adverse events were linked to the treatment.
Implications for Cardiovascular Health
Co-lead author Dr Ramin Ebrahimi of the University Medicine Greifswald in Germany highlighted the potential impact of these findings. In a population of 200 individuals with cardiovascular disease, he noted that low-dose colchicine could prevent approximately two heart attacks and two strokes. He emphasized, “Reductions like this can make a real difference for patients who live with ongoing, lifelong cardiovascular risk.”
As cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death globally, this research positions colchicine as a “promising inexpensive and accessible option” for secondary prevention among high-risk patients. Senior author Professor Lars Hemkens from the University of Bern in Switzerland remarked on the significance of repurposing this low-cost medication: “These results come from publicly funded trials, showcasing the power of academic research to reveal treatment opportunities that traditional drug development often overlooks.”
Further Research Needed
While the study provides compelling evidence for colchicine’s benefits, the findings published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews indicate that the effects on overall mortality rates remain less clear. The trials did not assess whether colchicine improves patients’ quality of life or reduces the frequency of hospital stays.
The research team underscored the necessity for further studies in these areas to better understand the full impact of colchicine on cardiovascular health. As the medical community continues to explore new applications for existing drugs, colchicine’s potential benefits for heart health could pave the way for innovative treatment strategies.
