Historic Welsh Chapel for Sale with Plans for Major Conversion
The historic Capel Pengroes, located in the village of Penygroes in Carmarthenshire, Wales, is now on the market for £180,000. This independent chapel, which opened over a century ago, is set to undergo significant transformation following the granting of planning permission to convert it into seven residential flats.
The chapel, originally constructed in 1825 and rebuilt on multiple occasions, features a striking Arts and Craft architectural style. The current structure, completed in 1914, boasts rubble stone walls, a slate roof, and distinctive flat-headed windows adorned with colored glass. Despite the passage of time, the interior remains largely intact, creating a unique atmosphere reminiscent of its original purpose.
Inside, visitors will find original pews, a traditional pulpit, and an impressive pipe organ. The chapel’s barrel ceiling, embellished with intricate plasterwork and decorative coving, further highlights its historical charm. The property has maintained its character since it closed in 2002, giving it a “frozen-in-time” feel that appeals to potential buyers.
In 2024, a planning application was submitted by Daniel Davies of DJ & ME Davies Rental to convert the now-unused chapel into residential units. The proposal respected the building’s heritage, acknowledging the nearby Calfaria Chapel, which is still in use but not included in the plans. The application emphasized that the conversion would not disturb the surrounding area, avoiding the addition of a car park while promoting bicycle storage and public transport access due to the proximity of local amenities.
Approval for the conversion came in June 2025, under application reference PL/06099, as confirmed by Carmarthenshire County Council. This key milestone allows the next owner to begin realizing the vision for the chapel, creating seven homes while preserving its historical features.
The approved plans outline three spacious flats on the ground floor, three additional flats on the first floor, and a large penthouse-style unit on the top level. This variety of layouts is designed to attract both investors and owner-occupiers.
The estate agent handling the sale describes the chapel as a “unique property” filled with stunning period features, including the original pews and a magnificent pipe organ. These elements provide a solid foundation for a sympathetic restoration that combines historic character with modern living. The agent emphasizes that this is a rare opportunity to revitalize an iconic landmark property into luxury residences that retain their charm and individuality.
Capel Pengroes is currently listed for £180,000 with John Francis in Ammanford. Interested buyers can contact the agency at 01269 790034 for more information. This property not only represents a chance to own a piece of history but also to contribute to the ongoing narrative of the village and its heritage.
