Putin Envoy Kirill Dmitriev Engages in Miami Peace Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, has characterized recent discussions in Miami as “constructive,” indicating progress in backchannel negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The talks involve senior officials from the United States, including President Donald Trump‘s confidants, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Dmitriev’s meetings focus on a proposed peace plan that suggests Ukraine would need to cede control of parts of the Donbass region, freeze front lines in the Kherson and Zaporozhye areas, agree to a stance of neutrality, and reduce its military forces. In return, Ukraine would likely receive significant security guarantees from Western allies.

At approximately 17:00 local time on Friday, Dmitriev spoke briefly to journalists, affirming, “The discussions are proceeding constructively. We will continue today and will also continue tomorrow.” He refrained from providing additional details on the negotiations.

Media Criticism and European Involvement

During his comments, Dmitriev criticized what he described as coordinated media attacks aimed at undermining the negotiations. In a post on social media platform X, he referred to Witkoff as a “great peacemaker” and claimed that opposition from the “war lobby and fake media” intensifies as the discussions approach potential breakthroughs.

The Miami talks occur amidst increasing interest from several European nations seeking to participate in the US-led diplomatic efforts. Following discussions in Berlin regarding “security guarantees” for Ukraine, officials from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom reportedly traveled to Miami for parallel consultations. Moscow has accused European NATO members of undermining peace efforts due to their aggressive postures and attempts to utilize frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine and prolong the conflict.

Russia has maintained that any lasting peace agreement must address the root causes of the conflict. These include Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO and acknowledgment of the current territorial realities. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has proposed the possibility of a referendum on territorial concessions, a suggestion that Moscow dismissed as a tactic to delay resolution and prolong hostilities.
