Cardiff Community Transforms Street into Festive Fundraiser

Residents of Canada Road in Cardiff have come together to create a unique “walk-through advent calendar,” turning their street into a festive attraction while raising more than £700 for Cardiff Foodbank. This community initiative, supported by local businesses and St Monica’s Church in Wales Primary School, showcases holiday window displays in the lead-up to Christmas.

The advent calendar project began on December 1, when the first window display was revealed, crafted by students from St Monica’s and Morgans Consult. Each day, one or two homes unveil new decorations, offering a fresh surprise for passersby. The displays will remain visible until January 5, known as Twelfth Night, which is traditionally observed as the end of the Christmas season.

Nic Humphries, one of the project’s organizers, expressed delight at the community’s involvement, stating, “We weren’t sure how effective a project like this would be, but we have been amazed by people’s generosity. Every day there is something new to look forward to, which for me has really brightened up walking the dog in all this rain.”

Abigail Cuthbert, head teacher at St Monica’s, highlighted the initiative’s positive impact, particularly as the school has recently relocated to Canada Road. She noted, “We were very happy to get involved and help our new neighbours support Cardiff Foodbank and the wonderful services it provides.”

Mike Kitchin, managing director of Morgans Consult, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the project. “Seeing residents, schools and local businesses come together to bring a little extra Christmas warmth to the local area, while raising vital funds to support struggling families, has been amazing to see.”

This marks the second year that Canada Road has hosted the ‘advent windows project,’ but it is the first time it has also served as a fundraising effort. Planning began in October, with community members voting to support Cardiff Foodbank, which is part of the Trussell network and provides emergency food and support to those in crisis in Cardiff.

The initiative expanded with contributions from local businesses, including Cant a Mil Bookshop, located at either end of Canada Road. Rachel Biggs, CEO of Cardiff Foodbank, praised the community-led fundraiser, stating, “We’re really grateful for all the donations and very excited to see the rest of the window displays as they are revealed.”

Biggs also highlighted the need for such initiatives, noting that last winter, Cardiff Foodbank provided enough food for 47,907 meals, with over half of those recipients being children. She expressed hope that the initiative would raise awareness about the support available to families in the area.

For those interested in contributing to the fundraiser, donations can be made via the project’s JustGiving page. Individuals in need of emergency food assistance can find more information on Cardiff Foodbank’s website.

The “walk-through advent calendar” not only showcases the creativity and spirit of the Canada Road community but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting those in need during the holiday season.
