Humphries Advances After Thrilling Battle, Van Gerwen and Anderson Set for Showdown
The excitement at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship intensified as Luke Humphries narrowly defeated Gabriel Clemens in a gripping match on December 30, 2025. The thrilling contest at Alexandra Palace saw Humphries fend off a remarkable comeback from Clemens, setting the stage for a highly anticipated round four clash against either Nathan Aspinall or Kevin Doets.
Humphries, the reigning 2023/24 World Champion, started strong, establishing a 2–0 lead and executing a stunning 12-dart break in the third set. However, Clemens, who made history as the first German player to average over 100 at the World Championship, responded with tenacity. He landed checkouts of 81, 121, and 116, taking the fourth set and narrowing the match to 3–2. In a tense sixth set, Clemens even held a 2–1 lead before Humphries regained control with a crucial 50 checkout. The match concluded with Humphries securing victory through a composed 81 finish.
Reflecting on the match, Humphries acknowledged the pressure he faced from Clemens. “I didn’t expect that onslaught from Gabriel; he was the better player in the last three sets,” he stated. “You have to give credit to Gabriel because he pushed me and put me under pressure. If it went to 3–3, he would have had the initiative. I’m really proud of how I took out the 50 and then the 81 in the final set.”
In another exciting match, Michael van Gerwen triumphed over Arno Merk with a decisive 4–1 victory. Van Gerwen showcased his skill by hitting nine maximums and converting 50 percent of his doubles, despite Merk’s impressive checkouts of 145, 120, and 67. “Overall, I put in a decent performance,” Van Gerwen commented. “In patches, I played some really good darts… I’m really looking forward to playing Gary. There’s always room for fireworks.”
The evening also featured Gary Anderson, who advanced to the last 16 by defeating Jermaine Wattimena in a nail-biting deciding set. Despite missing several match darts, including one for a nine-darter, Anderson’s 14 maximums were instrumental in securing his spot. “I bottled it a few times, but I can still play,” he admitted, averaging over 100 for the second consecutive match.
The round four lineup promises to deliver high-stakes drama at Alexandra Palace. Humphries is set to face either Aspinall or Doets, while Rob Cross will meet Luke Littler. Additionally, Ryan Searle will take on Mark Hurrell, with the highly anticipated clash of Van Gerwen and Anderson on the horizon.
The mix of seasoned champions and emerging talents adds to the tournament’s unpredictability, ensuring that each match could significantly influence the race for the prestigious Sid Waddell Trophy. Fans can expect tactical battles, impressive checkouts, and spectacular maximums as players aim to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
The championship continues its festive double-session format on December 30, featuring a thrilling afternoon session culminating in Aspinall’s match against Ricky Evans. The evening will showcase Littler versus Cross, Searle against Hurrell, and the much-anticipated clash between Humphries and the winner of Van Gerwen and Anderson. As the tournament progresses, the atmosphere is set for exhilarating nights of darts, leading toward the final stages of this prestigious championship.
