Five distinguished academics and alumni from the University of Cambridge have been recognised in the King’s 2026 New Year’s Honours List. The recipients have made significant contributions across various fields, including the arts, sciences, and healthcare, showcasing the university’s commitment to excellence and innovation.
Recognitions and Contributions
Dr. Suzy Lishman, an honorary fellow of Girton College and a Girton alumna, has received a damehood for her pivotal work in the medical examiner system and patient safety. Reflecting on her honour, Lishman noted, “It was very difficult not telling my family, but they’re thrilled now. I’m so pleased that my work on medical examiners and patient safety has been recognised.”
Meera Syal, also an honorary fellow at Murray Edwards College, has been awarded a damehood for her contributions to literature, drama, and charitable causes. Syal, who is a prominent comedian and writer, was previously recognised with an honorary fellowship in March for her advocacy of diversity and equality within the arts. The college stated, “We continue to be inspired by the profound impact Meera has made on the landscape of British film and television, as well as our college community.”

Currently serving as Cambridge University’s Professor of Transplant Surgery and a Consultant Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Nicholson expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I am delighted to receive an OBE … transplantation is very much a team effort, and this honour reflects the dedication and hard work of the many outstanding people that I am fortunate to work with in both academia and the NHS.”
Dr. Alya Humphrey, an associate at Clare Hall and professor of psychiatry, has been awarded an MBE for her clinical work in the NHS assisting youth with acquired brain injuries.
Notable Alumni Achievements
The Honours List also highlights several prominent Cambridge alumni. Reflecting on his achievement, Canagarajah stated, “As a boy from a once war-torn land to being recognised by royalty is quite a remarkable journey. It is because of the transformative power of education and the opportunities it presents that this has been possible.”
Another notable recipient is Dr. Tristram Hunt, the current director of the Victoria and Albert Museum Trust, who also received a knighthood. Hunt completed his undergraduate studies in History at Trinity College in 1995 and obtained his PhD in Victorian History at King’s College in 2000.
