Brechin City Manager Ray McKinnon Resigns Amid Team Struggles
Brechin City has announced the resignation of manager Ray McKinnon, effective immediately. The decision comes after a challenging period for the club, which is currently competing in the Highland League. McKinnon, aged 55, had been at the helm for nine months and had initially joined as interim manager in March, officially taking on the permanent role in April.
During his tenure, McKinnon successfully guided Brechin City to a commendable second-place finish in the Highland League. The team narrowly missed out on the title, finishing just behind Brora Rangers on goal difference. However, recent performances have raised concerns, as the club has only secured two victories in their last five matches, which included draws against Banks O’Dee and Keith, as well as a surprising 1-0 defeat to Strathspey Thistle.
As of now, Brechin City finds themselves in second place, trailing league leaders Formartine United by two points. Additionally, they hold only a slim one-point lead over Brora Rangers, who have two games in hand. The stakes are high, as this season marks Brechin City’s final opportunity to secure promotion to the next level. If they do not achieve this, they will be relegated to the Lowland League East for the upcoming season.
The announcement of McKinnon’s resignation coincides with the postponement of all Highland League matches due to severe weather conditions, including snow warnings in the region. In the interim, assistant manager Paul Watson and coach Stuart Garden will take charge of the team as Brechin City begins the search for a new manager.
The club now faces a critical juncture as they navigate the remainder of the season with the aim of achieving their promotion aspirations. Fans and players alike will be looking for a swift turnaround in the team’s fortunes in the wake of this managerial change.
