Leicester City Faces Potential Exodus as Financial Woes Mount
Leicester City is bracing for a potential exit of three key players as financial uncertainties loom over the club. The transfer deadline is set for 19:00 GMT on February 2, 2024, and reports suggest that Harry Winks, Wout Faes, and Boubakary Soumare could leave the King Power Stadium as the club looks to reshape its squad following a disappointing first half of the season under the management of Marti Cifuentes.
The club’s current predicament is exacerbated by their position in the Championship, where they sit 13th in the table with 34 points from 25 matches. Having lost three of their last five games, Leicester is no stranger to turmoil, having been relegated from the Premier League last season. This season, the Foxes are seen as potential contenders for promotion, but their financial landscape differs significantly from that of other clubs like Ipswich Town and Southampton, who also faced relegation but have stronger financial backing.
Both Winks and Faes were integral members of the title-winning squad under former manager Enzo Maresca. They have considerable experience at the top level, with Winks representing England and Faes playing for Belgium. However, their future at Leicester appears uncertain, particularly for Winks, who is reportedly earning £90,000 per week. Since a 3-2 defeat at home to Sheffield United on November 29, 2023, he has not featured in Cifuentes’ plans, raising questions about his role at the club.
Faes, who joined Leicester from Stade de Reims for £15 million, has also faced an extended absence from the team. His name has been linked with various clubs, including Turkish side Beşiktaş and VfL Wolfsburg, but no deals have materialized. Reports indicate that Leicester would consider a transfer fee of around €10 million for Faes, particularly with interest from Lazio after the summer window.
Soumare’s situation mirrors that of his teammates. Acquired for £17 million from LOSC Lille following Leicester’s FA Cup triumph in May 2021, he has struggled to make a significant impact. With only 109 appearances to his name, he has missed the last seven matches due to a knee injury, and speculation surrounding his future has persisted since the club’s relegation.
As the transfer window progresses, Leicester’s ability to navigate these financial challenges will be crucial. With uncertainty surrounding a possible points deduction, the club must pursue successful dealings to stabilize their financial future. Losing three high-earning players who have struggled for consistent game time could alleviate some of their financial burdens and help the club realign its goals for the remainder of the season.
In a related development, Leicester is also considering a move for former West Ham United forward Michail Antonio, who is available as a free agent following the termination of Julian Carranza‘s loan from Feyenoord. The club’s winter transfer activity will not only impact their financial standing but also reflect on Cifuentes’ intentions for the squad moving forward.
With key decisions on the horizon, Leicester City remains at a critical juncture. The next few weeks could define the club’s trajectory as they strive to regain their place in the top tier of English football while managing complex financial realities.
