Astronomers Investigate Mysterious 3I/ATLAS as Alien Theories Resurface
In July 2023, astronomers detected an unusual object in our solar system, designated as 3I/ATLAS. This interstellar visitor, which is only the third of its kind observed, prompted renewed speculation about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. As it approached Earth, cutting the distance to a mere 167 million miles on December 19, 2023, the scientific community turned its focus to understanding its origins and characteristics.
Scientific Mobilization and Observations
The discovery of 3I/ATLAS was made by a survey telescope in Chile. While many scientists believe it is a natural comet composed of ice and dust, some researchers are hesitant to completely dismiss the idea of an artificial origin. In a bid to explore this possibility, the Breakthrough Listen initiative, dedicated to searching for signs of intelligent life, employed the Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope.
This ambitious effort aimed to detect any technological signals that might indicate the presence of intelligent life. The telescope conducted its observations on the day before the object’s closest approach, hoping to capture any stray signals that could alter our understanding of the cosmos. Despite the high stakes, the findings were less than encouraging for those anticipating a groundbreaking discovery.
Findings and Theories in Debate
The results from this critical observation were detailed in a paper that has yet to undergo peer review. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) confirmed the outcome, stating, “No artificial radio emission localised to 3I/ATLAS was detected.” They concluded that the object appears to be “silent, cold, and likely lifeless.” According to SETI, “3I/ATLAS continues to behave as expected from natural astrophysical processes.”
Despite the lack of detected signals, researchers noted that 3I/ATLAS remains an intriguing subject for further observation, given the rarity of interstellar objects. The absence of evidence has not silenced ongoing debates in the scientific community. Notably, Avi Loeb, a physicist from Harvard University, continues to scrutinize the object for any anomalies that may not align with known physical laws.
Loeb has observed peculiarities in 3I/ATLAS, including its potential size and a trajectory that appears finely tuned, bringing it close to significant planets such as Mars, Venus, and Jupiter. He has developed a metric known as the “Loeb scale” to evaluate the likelihood of interstellar objects being artificial, ranking 3I/ATLAS at four shortly after its discovery. He has indicated that he will not adjust this rating until new data from its closest approach is thoroughly analyzed and released.
The Breakthrough Listen paper acknowledged the current lack of evidence supporting the notion that 3I/ATLAS is anything other than a natural object, yet it emphasized the necessity for thorough investigation. “Given the small number of such objects known (only three to date) and the plausibility of interstellar probes as a technosignature, thorough study is warranted,” the researchers stated.
Critics argue that if 3I/ATLAS were indeed an alien spacecraft, it would likely be emitting signals, particularly considering Earth’s significant radio emissions. The absence of such signals has reinforced the hypothesis that the object is simply a large mass of carbon dioxide and water ice. Nevertheless, until all data from its closest approach is fully analyzed—a process that could take several months—the investigation into the origins and nature of 3I/ATLAS will continue.
