New Management Promises Fresh Vision for Thatcham’s Community Facilities
The newly appointed team overseeing the Thatcham Memorial Foundation has announced ambitious plans for the town’s community facilities. As of January 2024, the foundation is under new management, with a focus on enhancing accessibility and community engagement. This change follows the recent appointment of a new group of trustees, who express a commitment to revitalizing the parkland and facilities in Thatcham.
The Thatcham Memorial Foundation, which spans seven-and-a-half acres, was established shortly after the Second World War. It was acquired from local landowners at a price below market value through public donations. Since then, it has served as a vital community space managed by a charitable organization.
Plans for Improvement and Community Engagement
Vicky Caws, a spokesperson for the new management team, emphasized their dedication to making the park accessible to all residents. “All of us are massively about community access,” Caws stated in an interview shortly before the festive break. Recent initiatives include the planting of new trees and the reinstatement of benches to encourage community use of the park. Caws also mentioned that the team is exploring the reintroduction of the popular children’s basketball hoop and football goals, which were dismantled during recent flood mitigation works.
The ongoing flood mitigation project, overseen by West Berkshire Council, began in 2023 and has raised concerns about access routes and pathways within the park. Despite these challenges, Caws reported that the team has made significant progress in restoring the park’s aesthetic appeal. They have also purchased an alleyway near Beverley Close to improve access for local residents.
In addition to enhancing the park, the new management is considering better parking arrangements in the evenings to facilitate easier pick-up for parents involved with local groups, such as the Squirrels and Scouts. They are also working to finalize lease agreements with organizations like the Scouting Association and the bowls club, providing greater security for these community groups.
Promotions and Future Initiatives
To highlight the facilities available at the Memorial Hall, the foundation is currently offering a promotional discount of 50% on hire fees for new customers until the end of April 2024. This initiative aims to attract individuals and organizations looking for space for events or one-off bookings.
Caws expressed optimism about the future, stating, “There’s stuff that does need to be done. But there’s much more positive movement. We are all so chuffed. We are putting our energy into positively going forward.” The trustees are eager to showcase the improvements and new opportunities that lie ahead for the Thatcham community.
As the Thatcham Memorial Foundation moves into 2026 under new management, the focus remains on fostering community spirit and ensuring that the facilities serve the needs of local residents effectively. The changes signal a fresh chapter for the foundation, with significant potential for enhancing community engagement and participation in local activities.
