LK Bennett Enters Administration as Next Explores Rescue Options
The renowned British fashion brand LK Bennett has entered administration, placing approximately 280 jobs at risk. The decision to appoint administrators comes shortly after the company sought a buyer to avert a complete business collapse. Retail giant Next is reportedly considering a potential rescue plan, focusing on acquiring the brand name and its intellectual property.
In recent weeks, LK Bennett, known for its signature kitten heels, engaged restructuring advisers Alvarez & Marsal as part of its efforts to stabilize the business. According to Sky News, Next is among the retailers looking into a bid. Rather than purchasing the physical stores, Next appears interested in a reduced offer targeting the brand name and associated trademarks.
Financial Struggles and Potential Buyers
The fashion label, established in 1990 by Linda Bennett, has experienced significant challenges in recent years. Once operating around 200 stores globally, including locations in the UK, US, China, and Russia, the brand now runs only nine standalone stores in the UK and 13 concessions. The company’s current ownership falls under Byland UK, led by Rebecca Feng, who previously managed LK Bennett’s Chinese franchise.
Despite efforts to save the brand from its initial administration, financial pressures have continued to mount. For the year ending January 27, 2024, LK Bennett reported a post-tax loss of £3.5 million on revenues of £42.1 million, a sharp decline from £48.8 million the previous year.
Analysts have noted that other industry giants, including Marks & Spencer and TFG London, the owner of brands such as Phase Eight and Hobbs, could potentially explore acquisition opportunities. However, there have been no confirmed formal offers from these companies as the situation unfolds.
A Legacy of Fashion
LK Bennett gained prominence for its elegant designs, particularly the kitten heels that earned Linda Bennett the title of “queen of the kitten heel.” Her creations have been favored by notable figures, including the Princess of Wales and former Prime Minister Theresa May. As the brand seeks to navigate this challenging phase, the future remains uncertain.
As LK Bennett explores its options, the retail landscape continues to evolve, with Next‘s potential involvement highlighting the ongoing trend of established brands reshaping their strategies in response to changing consumer demands.
