Roy Keane Backs Eddie Howe for Manchester United Manager Role

Roy Keane has expressed his support for Eddie Howe to become the new manager of Manchester United following the recent dismissal of Ruben Amorim. The announcement came after Amorim’s critical remarks about the club’s management following a 1-1 draw with Leeds, which ultimately led to his sacking on January 8, 2026.

Currently, Darren Fletcher is serving as the caretaker manager while the club seeks an interim head coach for the remainder of the season. United’s management is reportedly considering several candidates, including former players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Michael Carrick. The team is currently positioned seventh in the Premier League following three successive draws.

When asked about potential candidates, Keane, a former United captain, stated on Sky Sports: “You could throw 20 names at me and I’d still say the same thing. Whoever goes in, you wish them well.” Reflecting on Solskjaer’s previous success as caretaker after José Mourinho’s exit, Keane acknowledged that while Solskjaer might do well in the short term, he does not see him as a long-term solution.

Keane’s endorsement of Eddie Howe was clear. He praised the Newcastle manager’s calm demeanor and successful track record, saying, “I love his calmness, I think sometimes Manchester United need a bit of that.” Keane elaborated that Howe has managed a significant number of games and has led teams that play attractive football.

Howe has been instrumental in transforming Newcastle United into a competitive side. Under his leadership, Newcastle recently moved ahead of Manchester United in the league standings after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Leeds, featuring a dramatic last-minute goal by Harvey Barnes.

Notably, in 2025, he led Newcastle to their first domestic trophy in seven decades, clinching the League Cup with a 2-1 win against Liverpool in the final.
