Princess of Wales Marks 44th Birthday with Heartfelt NHS Visit
The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, celebrated her 44th birthday on January 5, 2026, following a surprise visit to Charing Cross Hospital in London. Accompanied by her husband, Prince William, the couple aimed to support National Health Service (NHS) staff who are currently facing significant challenges due to high flu case numbers this winter. This visit marked their first public engagement of the new year.
Kate’s birthday comes just days before the first anniversary of her announcement regarding her cancer remission. As she embarks on this new year, she and her family have recently settled into their new home, Forest Lodge, a Grade II-listed residence located in Windsor Great Park. The move from their previous home, Adelaide Cottage, took place in the autumn of 2025.
During their visit to the hospital, the couple interacted with NHS workers during their tea break, aiming to uplift spirits during a demanding period. One notable exchange occurred between Kate and Maureen Gilmour, an 86-year-old volunteer who assists patients undergoing chemotherapy. Gilmour explained that patients often wait for hours, to which Kate responded, “I know,” while touching William’s arm and adding, “We know.”
Kate was last seen publicly on Christmas Day, joining her family for the traditional church walk at Sandringham in Norfolk. Looking ahead, her son, Prince George, is set to turn 13 in July, transitioning from Lambrook Prep School to senior school in September, with Marlborough College and Eton being considered options.
Over the past year, Kate has gradually increased her public engagements. She has attended various significant events, including state banquets and commemorations for VE Day, and she made a solo visit to a storage facility for the Victoria and Albert Museum. While she missed Royal Ascot to focus on her recovery, she participated in the annual Order of the Garter service and met with families affected by the tragic Southport attack.
In September 2025, she debuted a new hairstyle, showcasing a blonder balayage, further marking her return to public life. Despite her active engagement in domestic affairs, Kate has not yet undertaken an overseas tour since her diagnosis.
Looking ahead, Prince William is expected to travel to the US for the FIFA World Cup in July, coinciding with celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence. It remains unclear whether Kate will accompany him on this trip.
Last year, as Kate turned 43, William made a heartfelt public declaration of his love for her through a social media post, praising her resilience during a challenging year. He expressed pride in her strength, stating, “the strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable.” The royal couple continues to navigate their public and personal lives with grace as they embrace new beginnings in 2026.
