Spartans Knock Out Inverness Caledonian Thistle in Scottish Cup
In a dramatic Scottish Cup Fourth Round clash on March 2, 2024, The Spartans eliminated Inverness Caledonian Thistle from the tournament following a penalty shootout. After a tense 120 minutes that concluded with a score of 0-0, Spartans triumphed 4-2 in penalties, sending Inverness out of the prestigious competition.
Both teams displayed determination throughout the match, but neither could find the back of the net during regular or extra time. This result is a significant moment for Spartans, who currently lead League Two, while Inverness will reflect on a disappointing exit from the tournament. The club has a storied history in the Scottish Cup, having famously clinched the title in 2015 and reaching the final again in 2020.
Inverness entered this match with momentum, having defeated Tranent 2-1 in the previous round. Ahead of the game, they made three changes to their lineup, bringing in Danny Devine, Paul Allan, and Joe Chalmers to replace Oscar MacIntyre, Adam Mackinnon, and Jordan Alonge. Notably, Mitchell Robertson, on loan from Celtic, started despite ongoing speculation about a transfer to Livingston.
The match began with an early scare for Spartans as Billy Mckay nearly opened the scoring just three minutes in. His shot was cleared off the line by Spartans goalkeeper Paddy Martin. Inverness continued to press, creating multiple opportunities, including a close attempt from Alfie Stewart, whose corner kick looked promising but was ultimately cleared.
As the first half drew to a close, Mckay found himself in a promising position once again, only to be thwarted by Martin yet again, showcasing the goalkeeper’s crucial role in Spartans’ defensive efforts. Inverness maintained their attacking momentum into the second half, with Liam Sole and Adam Mackinnon both coming close to scoring, but Martin’s performance kept the scoreline level.
Spartans also had their chances, notably when James Craigen struck the crossbar, adding to the tension as the match progressed without a goal from either side. As the game transitioned into extra time, both teams remained unable to find a breakthrough, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Spartans took an early lead with Craigen’s successful penalty. Inverness faltered when David Wotherspoon had his attempt saved, and despite some back-and-forth scoring, including a crucial save by Ross Munro to keep hopes alive for Inverness, Spartans ultimately secured their advancement with Kenzi Nair’s successful spot-kick.
The final score in the shootout was 4-2, marking a significant achievement for Spartans as they continue their impressive run in the Scottish Cup. For Inverness Caledonian Thistle, this defeat serves as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead as they regroup for their upcoming fixtures.
