Denis Irwin Questions Jurrien Timber’s World-Class Status
Denis Irwin, the former Manchester United defender, has expressed skepticism regarding claims that Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber is among the world-class full-backs in football. During a recent discussion about top players in this position, Irwin acknowledged Timber’s impressive performances but ultimately refrained from categorizing him as world-class.
Timber is enjoying a remarkable season at Arsenal, becoming a pivotal player for manager Mikel Arteta. The Dutch defender has made significant contributions from the right-back position, which has reportedly led Arsenal to consider a new deal for him. This potential contract extension highlights the club’s appreciation for his impact throughout the campaign.
Irwin, who made 529 appearances for Manchester United during his 12-year tenure, commented on Timber’s status in an interview with ESPN UK. He stated, “Again, a great defender, but world-class?” His remarks suggest that, despite Timber’s strong form, he falls short of the elite tier of defenders, which Irwin believes includes players like Achraf Hakimi, Reece James, Milos Kerkez, and Andrew Robertson.
Timber’s statistics this season bolster his case for recognition among Europe’s elite defenders. He has started all but four league matches for Arsenal and ranks in the 85th percentile for non-penalty goals plus assists per 90 minutes. His defensive metrics are equally impressive, placing him above the 80% mark in key areas such as tackles (87th percentile), aerial duels (86th), and interceptions (84th).
The versatility Timber has displayed further sets him apart. Mikel Arteta has utilized him in various defensive roles, including centre-back when Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba have been unavailable, as well as at left-back in an EFL Cup match against Chelsea.
Potential Departure of Quinten Timber
In related news, Arsenal appears to be on the verge of losing Timber’s brother, Quinten Timber, to French club Marseille. Reports indicate that Marseille has reached an agreement with Feyenoord for the midfielder, with only minor details pending finalization, according to FootMercato. Although Arsenal had shown interest in Quinten as a midfield option, they have yet to make a formal offer.
Additionally, young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri is expected to join Marseille on loan for the remainder of the season, further highlighting Arsenal’s potential reshuffling of their squad as the transfer window approaches.
As discussions about player valuations and class continue, the contrasting views on Jurrien Timber‘s status underline the complexities of evaluating talent in the competitive landscape of modern football.
