Residents Rally Against Increasing Fly Tipping in Sefton
Residents in south Sefton are expressing their anger and frustration over a surge in fly tipping incidents, particularly around communal bin areas on Bryant Road in Litherland. A local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, described the deplorable conditions, stating, “There’s bags split with garbage all over the floor, paint cans, used nappies and sanitary pads.” This situation has become a source of concern in the community, prompting calls for urgent action from local authorities.
The waste management in the area is a collaborative effort between One Vision Housing and Sefton Council. While both organizations acknowledge the challenges posed by fly tipping, residents note that the lack of monitoring and maintenance at the bin sites has resulted in increased littering. The anonymous resident commented, “The problem is that it’s not covered or monitored, and once the bins get full, some people are just throwing the rubbish anywhere.”
According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, there were 3,903 fly-tipping incidents reported in Sefton in 2023. This illegal disposal of waste is not only a nuisance but also a significant financial burden, costing local authorities tens of millions of pounds annually. In response to the ongoing issue, Sefton Council has initiated various measures to combat fly tipping and improve waste management.
Community Concerns and Council Response
The resident highlighted the community’s effort to maintain cleanliness, stating, “This has happened before, and One Vision came out and cleared it all up. The residents have been keeping it tidy and keeping an eye on things, but now this.” Their frustration reflects a broader sentiment among residents who wish to preserve the quality of their living environment.
In a recent meeting on January 20, 2024, Cllr Harvey, the Cabinet member for cleansing and street scene, provided an update on the council’s strategies to address the problem. He mentioned that additional resources have been allocated to tackle fly tipping, with plans to bolster the Environmental Enforcement team. “Following a successful recruitment, we will see three additional officers joining the team at the start of the new year,” he said. This expansion aims to enhance monitoring efforts and improve community engagement.
Sefton Council is also considering increasing the maximum penalty for fly tipping from £400 to £1,000 and doubling the maximum penalty for littering from £75 to £150. These measures highlight the council’s commitment to combating waste-related offences and ensuring a cleaner environment for residents.
Future Initiatives and Community Engagement
To further combat fly tipping, Sefton Council has commenced a trial of CCTV monitoring in high-risk areas. This initiative is designed to enhance enforcement activity and deter potential offenders. Additionally, the implementation of a Public Spaces Protection Order allows council officers to address incidents of littering and other anti-social behaviour more effectively.
The local authority’s proactive approach aims to foster a cleaner, safer community. As Cllr Harvey explained, “This doubling of the team will be further enhanced by recruitment of two more enforcement officers to start in April 2026.” These developments signal a commitment to tackling not just the immediate issues but also the underlying factors contributing to fly tipping.
As residents and local organizations continue to collaborate in addressing these concerns, the hope is that Sefton will see a marked improvement in the management of waste and the overall cleanliness of the community. The sentiment remains strong among residents: “It’s a nice place to live, and we don’t like to be surrounded by rubbish.”
