A recent visit to Knowsley Safari Park provided a glimpse into the daily routines of the dedicated ungulate team responsible for the park’s diverse hooved animals. On Thursday morning, the team welcomed visitors to experience the lively antics of an eight-week-old southern white rhino calf named Kamari. The calf, full of energy, was seen joyfully running around her enclosure, showcasing a playful spirit that has captivated both her keepers and the public.

The head of the ungulate team, Lindsay Banks, and senior ungulate keeper Louise McKinnon, who have been with the park for five and four years respectively, shared insights into their responsibilities and the unique personality traits of Kamari. As Kamari enjoyed her time rolling in fresh hay, McKinnon noted, “She loves running into her fresh hay, the more the better.”

Kamari’s mother, Bayami, plays a crucial role in her upbringing. Banks explained, “Kamari is full of beans and has a strong personality. She’s a really confident individual rhino, which makes her great to work with.” The bond between the keepers and the rhinos is essential; Banks elaborated that white rhinos are naturally tactile, allowing for a strong relationship-building process.

A typical day for Kamari involves suckling from her mother and exploring her environment, especially during the colder months when she remains indoors. As Banks described, “When she’s a bit bigger and the weather is warm, she will be meeting other members of the rhino crash.” The keepers eagerly anticipate the spring when Kamari will have the opportunity to roam the outdoor reserve, providing visitors with a better chance to observe her playful behavior.

Daily Duties of the Ungulate Team

The ungulate team follows a structured daily routine to ensure the health and well-being of all animals in their care. Each morning, keepers gather to assign responsibilities for various animals, which include rhinos, giraffes, and African antelopes. Banks stated, “First port of call is health checking the animals and making sure they’re alright after overnight.”

This routine includes feeding the animals and cleaning their living spaces. Currently, Knowsley Safari Park is home to ten rhinos, making it one of the largest populations in the UK. Banks mentioned, “Mum, Bayami, came to us from a zoo in France as part of a breeding programme. The rhinos tend to move around European zoos to improve their genetics and ensure a healthy population.”

Understanding the size of these magnificent creatures is essential for both keepers and visitors alike. An adult rhino can weigh over two tons, comparable to the weight of a car, and Banks emphasized the awe that comes with being close to them. “When you’re there in their space, you see how big they really are,” she noted.
