Newcastle’s Toon Kit Collector to Close, Owners Promise New Beginnings
A beloved shop in Newcastle, known for its unique collection of football memorabilia, is set to close its doors on January 31, 2024. Toon Kit Collector, which has gained significant popularity among local fans, especially supporters of Newcastle United, announced its impending closure on social media this past Saturday. The owners have reassured customers that this decision marks not an end, but rather a transition to new opportunities.
Toon Kit Collector originally opened as a pop-up shop in the Central Arcade, a prime location in Newcastle’s city centre, back in July 2023. Initially intended to last for just three months, the shop’s success led to a six-month extension, culminating in a final farewell next weekend. The store rapidly became a hub for football enthusiasts, attracting crowds eager to explore its extensive range of vintage and contemporary football apparel, including training gear and accessories.
In an announcement shared via Instagram, the owners expressed gratitude for the support they received during this period: “Next Saturday marks the end of our shop in the city centre, and what a chapter it’s been. We’ve loved every minute of being in town, meeting so many incredible people, learning as we went, and building something we’re genuinely proud of.” This sentiment reflects the community spirit that has characterized Toon Kit Collector since its inception.
The shop has been particularly noted for its diverse inventory, featuring items like an NUFC away strip from the late 1980s alongside modern jerseys from recent seasons. Customers have shared their appreciation for the store, with many expressing sadness over its closure. Local comedian Kai Humphries commented, “Glad I got to pay a visit and buy a bit of history from ya. Love what you’ve done and sad to see the shop go but I’ll be keeping an eye on your stock online.”
Despite the physical closure, the owners have indicated that Toon Kit Collector will continue to operate online, hinting at “very exciting plans in the pipeline.” Their message assures customers that while this chapter is concluding, the journey of the business is far from over.
As the Newcastle community prepares to bid farewell to Toon Kit Collector’s physical presence, many are eager to see how the brand evolves in the future. The transition from a local shop to an online presence is a trend some businesses have successfully navigated, and it remains to be seen how Toon Kit Collector will adapt.
This closure serves as a reminder of the impact small businesses can have within their communities, fostering connections and creating lasting memories. The support for Toon Kit Collector underscores the importance of local establishments in nurturing a vibrant community spirit.
