Kelvin Fletcher Faces Weather Crisis on Family Farm
Kelvin Fletcher and his wife, Liz, encountered a significant challenge on their farm due to severe weather conditions. The couple, who transitioned from television to agriculture in 2021, have documented their journey on the ITV series Fletcher’s Family Farm. During a recent episode that aired on January 26, 2024, they faced a weather-related setback that could have serious implications for their livestock.
Located in Wincle, near Macclesfield, their 120-acre farm has been a source of excitement and hard work for the couple. However, a sudden shift in weather brought heavy snow, disrupting their carefully laid plans. Kelvin expressed concern about the impact of the cold snap on their pregnant animals, stating, “When the weather changes, so do our plans, and our priority is bringing in the next batch of pregnant animals as this cold snap could mean disaster for their lambs.”
The unpredictable weather in the Peak District has proven to be a learning experience for the Fletchers. Kelvin noted, “One thing we’ve learned about living in the Peak District is how changeable the weather can be.” He described the rapid transition from a mild day to a snowstorm, which complicates their operations on the farm.
In response to the impending snow, the couple quickly took action to prepare. Kelvin emphasized the urgency, saying, “There’s light to heavy snow for the next four hours. I’m just thinking if we quickly prep these and go and get the sheep in.” He explained that if the temperature fell drastically, the pregnant ewes might become stressed, which could jeopardize the health of their lambs.
To mitigate potential issues, the Fletchers focused on creating a safe environment for their animals. Kelvin elaborated, “So we are just lining the floor now, to help draw in any moisture. It’s just good to kind of kill any bacteria. The stall’s cleaned, and bedding laid. It’s time to get the sheep in before this weather gets any worse.”
Despite the challenges posed by the snow, the couple remained committed to managing their farm effectively. The episode showcased not only their dedication to animal welfare but also highlighted the importance of adaptability in farming.
In addition to dealing with the weather crisis, the episode featured other significant moments, including the family’s first public event. Liz’s daughter Marnie took center stage, underscoring the importance of animal husbandry as she cared for an orphaned lamb named Aga. Meanwhile, Bruce the boar arrived on the farm, enhancing their pig-breeding efforts. The couple also worked on renovating the farm cottage to generate additional income through holiday rentals.
As the Fletchers navigate this tumultuous period, viewers can catch more of their adventures on Fletcher’s on the Farm, which airs at 19:30 on ITV1 and ITVX. The couple’s journey continues to resonate with audiences who appreciate the realities of modern farming and the resilience it demands.
